Draw notes: #3 seed missing from draw. Virginia Wade turned her ankle before the Open and is probably this seed.

Evert's amazing come from behind win over Eisel in the 2R (she saves 6 match points in a nationally televised match) sets off a frenzy of media and fan interest. Grown tour vets are reduced to tears as the crowd cheers "Little Miss America" on. Billie Jean, convinced the future of women's pro tennis is at stake if Evert wins it all as an amateur, ends the Floridains Cinderella dream in the semis. The other sensation of the year-Aussie Evonne Goolagong, won't play here, a decision made by her coach-manager Viv Edwards.

King gets a Ford Torino car for winning in the finals. During the presentation ceremony Casals got a big laugh by suggesting Larry King take care of his wife for the other gals by making her pregnant. On seeing BJ get into her car Rosie cracked that the least the Slims tour could do was give the finalist a bicycle.

The PSW's low prize money in 1970 (12-1 in favor of the men) had been the spark that started the whole women's only Virginia Slims circuit. Jack Kramer has tried and failed to get all the women banned. The 1971 prize money (#10,000) was raised to $18,000 only due to extra money contributed by Virginai Slims to meet the minimum standard of $18,000.

All of this history came into play in the finals before 3,200 and a national TV audience. Billie Jean and Rosie put up with what both thought were numerous bad calls from one lineswoman in particular. Casals won thne first point of the tiebreak. On the second point she hit a forehand King thought was clearly lonfg. When lineswoman Bettry Chamie called it in the fireworks started. King demanded the lineswoman be removed. "That's it, I want her out", she said. The umpire gave her word she would do so when Jack Kramer (commentating on TV up in the booth) sent her a note saying the lineswoman stayed. Jack was tournament referee as well as commentating on TV. He refused to come down form the booth. King wanted to leave and asked Rosie what she thought. "Fine with me Old Lad, That woman's out to lunch." On the air Jack said, "If the girls want to walk out, let them go!" King picked up her racquets and walked off court. Rather than be declared the winner Rosie followed to a chorus of boos.

The infamous episode remains the only double default in tennis history after both sides have taken the court. Casals and King got a lot of press-most of it bad, and the PSW was doomed never again to be a major event for women. LA Times writer Jim Murray really lays into King, writing she was "a lousy loser". He went on with "her father got her into tennis so she wouldn't be a lady wrestler".

* also have score of 2-1 in tiebreak. Resolve.

A historic event-for by winning the final Billie Jean becomes the first woman ever to win more than $100,000 US in one year. The crowd gives her a 10 minute ovation as Billie Jean and Rosie pour champagne over each other in celebration. This was Virginia Slims last event of the year. Against all odds the circuit has been a smash success with Mrs. King it's leading lady. Pro women's tennis is here to stay.

Billingham replaces Stalybridge on this year's Dewar Circuit. The court was built over an ice rink! The ice melted and seeped through the Uni-Turf and refroze, making the court a hazard. Officials tried sawdust to no avail.

Julie Heldman fell five times on the slippery surface in beating Evonne in the semis. The cagy American saw the chancew for a major upset and pursued it tenaciously. Heldman clawed back from 0-3 and 3-5 down in the second set. Julie walked off court with bloody knees from the falls smiling.

Evonne was reluctant not to play if Heldman was game. "I didn't particularly want to break my neck, but if Julie could put up with it, so could I."

Wade overcame Durr ("You always have a different match with her which is intersting") and Heldman. Julie led 6-4 5-1 and then collapsed.

2,200 showed for the last two days.

The venue was cavernous Wembley Stadium. Crowds were nonexistent except the last two days, even ever smiling Evonne Goolagong appeared unhappy. After her semi Evonne said she felt as though she was only practicing. Without her coach for the first time ever the young heroine of 1971 looks lost. The Aussie's backhand breaks down vs. Durr, who wins a close match to ruin the Wimbledon final rematch.

Billie Jean is dissapointed because she "wanted another crack at Evonne", but final is one of highlights of 1971. Durr is the only woman to beat King more than twice all year (3 wins in fact) and always makes King strain for victory. King rolls through the first set in only 22 minutes, but Durr rebounds from 1-6 2-5 0-40, eventually saving 4 match points to win the second set 7-5.

The third set has the crows of 5,000 in a tizzy. Francoise breaks and leads 5-2. At 5-3 40-30 Durr has a match point of her own. She angles a ball that has King scrambling off court and then misses a sitter volley into the net. King "agression personified", pounces on Durr's weak serve-the air going out of Francoise at this point. It ends on a dur double-fault.

King explains why Durr is so tough afterwards: "Even before i had my four match points I thought the title was slipping away. People do not realise how fast Francoise runs. She covers a tremendous amount of court and being unorthodox you cannot tell where her passing shots are going. She was getting my volleys back and she was hitting so close to the lines it was unbelievable."

King leaves happy despite not getting a shot at Evonne. She takes home her 18th event of the yeat, 1,000 pounds, and 4,000 pounds ($10,000 US) bonus for finishing first in the Pepsi Grand Prix. The choice of who is #1 thus remains somewhat murky. Most pundits go with Goolagong as she won Wimbledon, but it was King who had the more consistent year.

Wade finally defeats little Miss Sunshine after 4 straight losses to Evonne. The setting may have helped, as Ginny repeats as the champion at Aberavon for the third year in a row. Wade recovered from a break down in the first at 2-4 and 0-2 in the tiebreak, rattling off 6 points. Goolagong then got to 5-6 in the TB before Wade closed it out.

Evonne got revenge in the semis over Julie Heldman, reversing a previous defeat at Billingham. Julie had a set point at 6-5 then faded in the second set.

The social highlight of the circuit is the Saturday night caberet put on by the players. The bad boy (Bob Hewitt) and bad girl (Patti Hogan) of the circuit get together to parody each other. Both are notorious for bad language and questioning calls. Patti plays "Hewitt" while Bob plays "Miss Hogan" and the whole crowd had a great laugh.

This is the crowning event of the 5 stop Dewar Cup circuit. All the events were hold on Uniform, a carpet surface imported from Boston. The top 8 qualify on points from the first 4 stops.

Points System: Winner (4 points), Finalist (3 points), Semifinals (2 points) Quarterfinals (1 point)

Evonne plays the Dewar Circuit without her coach. The odd semi score is misleading-all the games were close, Julie's spins and tactics ("miss Heldman was at her most Machiavellian") winning the day. Wade had a great circuit, completing a recovery from a broken ankle suffered in America. Wade sweeps the field "in her most imperious manner". The final must have been especially delicious for Virginia, as Julie Heldman had written an article for the London Times the previous Sunday which dissected Wade's game and it's weaknesses. A fired up Wade slammed her shots with extra gusto.

*A shocking score as this is King's best surface!

quote of November: "Christchurch had a taste of the best in women's tennis last January when Goolagong and her collegues packed the stands at Wilding Park [Christchurch's main tennis venue] for the first time in more than 10 years. This surely left the palate titillated for a second serving in December. The Benson & Hedges women's tournament will be the first all-women's tournament in Australia and New Zealand. As such it is another example of a women's lib. movement that has been active in tennis for the last year or so."

  • prize pool: $7,500 (W=2,535)
  • Goolagong had plans to play here again and exhibitons in other NZ towns, but was hindered by viral infection, Judy Dalton took her place
  • it was "a marked success" - $9,000 gate money and ca. $6,000 of profit)
  • the DF tiebreaker was won with 8-6 points, the Hunt-Legge tiebreaker was won with 7-3

The Aussie LTA tried to prevent Dalton, Melville, and Hunt from playing here because it conflicted with Queensland. The women had better prize money in New Zealand ($7,500 as against $300 in Queensland) and decided to ignore the threat of suspension. The LTA's petty revenge was to omit them from the national rankings and to seek to have all of New Zealand banned from IFT events. Needless to say none of the women went to the Aussie, and Kerry was thrilled after winning the whole event.

On court action saw Francoise Durr tank her second set in the quarters after losing a decision after she demanded the tournament referee come out. Though her opponent agreed Durr's ball was in the umpire refused to change the call. After being told the line call stood Durr lost the next point, and with it the set. She clapped her hands and said "Thank you" to the umpire and referee. Refusing comment after the match ("Don't ask me to say anything or I'll say rude things") she booked the first plane out. Apparently Francoise HAD said some rude things "in French", because the umpire came off the court in tears.

More Durr drama took place when she got into it with Billie Jean King. King wanted an extra day of rest due to a strained knee. Durr told organizers no way. "There were several angry exchanges but eventually Biliie Jean acceded. The atmosphere on the court was a bit frigid, to say the least."

Controversy ensued when it was revealed that Evonne was paid a $1,500 appearance fee by Queensland newspaers-5 times the amount of the total prize money for the entire field. It was her price (or more exactly, that of her manager Vic Edwards) for not going to Auckland as planned. Christchurch and Auckland had originally offered Viv $1,000 to secure Evonne. Auusie newspapers blast the LTA for it's "veiled" threats to ban Evonne. One wonders if the papers defended the other Aussie gals who don't have the star power of Goolagong or Court.

Speaking of Court, she will be absent as she prepares for the birth of her first child. The LTA doesn't realize that the amateur era is a thing of the past or that Court is pregnant, as she got 4 letters from the LTA telling her she must be back in Australia by October 1st or risk a ban. Court just ignored the letters. An LTAA official was quoted as saying "Margaret should have signed that form and come home by October 1 . Now she risks our telling the ILTF that we don't hold her in good standing."
