May, June,December, January (71) issues of World Tennis have been fully covered. The December issue has records for many players from late 1970 to late 1971

We made use of all of John Dolan's results for 1971 out of Women's Tennis: The Ultimate Guide: 1968-1984.

March covered in the New York Times.

This new 1971 thread owes much to the old thread at: 1971 Results - TennisForum.com
I also added Ugarte's results at: Thread 1971 - TennisForum.com

Special thanks go out to Chaton for many contributions to this thread, especially for the German results. I also wish to thank Wolbo for some Dutch results.

The Computer has also added many pages of results that are much appreciated.

Week of December 28-January 3

December 26-29, 1970 1971 FEDERATION CUP , Perth, Austrlia (Grass)
Venue: Royal King's Park

1st Round:

Quarterfinals:

Semifinals:

Australia [2] d. France [4] 3-0.

Court d. Chanfreau 6-1 6-1
Goolagong d. Durr 6-3 3-6 6-0
Court/Goolagong d. Chanfreu/Durr 6-2 6-3

GB [1] d. US [3] 3-0.

Wade d. Walsh 7-5 6-4
Jones d. Hogan 6-3 7-5.

Final:

Australia [1] d. Great Britain [2] 3-0

Goolagong d. Wade 6-4 6-1
Court d. Jones 6-8 6-3 6-3
Court/Hunt d. Shaw/Wade 6-4 6-4

A Fed Cup actually played in the wrong year, the Aussies repeat to take their record 5th Cup. Goolagong becomes Oz's #2 player after Kerry Melville and Judy Dalton are banned for intending to play the Virginia Slims circuit. Despite Jones extending Court to near exhaustion and cramps Margaret prevailed. A blistering heat of 122 degrees Fahrenheit keeps the crowd down to 4,200 in the final. 11 people actually collapse from the heat.. At one point Virginia Wade looked ready to default, slumping in the chair on the changeover with her head between her knees. Captain Winnie Shaw revived her by dumping ice water over her head then a towel around the neck.

The heat (only 101!) and high winds were also a feature of the semis. An overcapacity crowd of 6,000 saw Evonne get revenge over Francoise Durr. The young American crew was done in by double faults-Sharon Walsh had 8 vs Wade and Patti Hogan doubles 7 times vs Jones.

"I’m dead, from too much promoting this tournament and not enough practice.” said Billie Jean King after her 1st round cliffjhanger. Francoise Durr was almost the death of her. Durr has a point for 6-5, missing a passing shot by half an inch. BJ—“I should have lost the match there.” King was trying out contact lens, but burning eyes means a return to her famous glasses. Durr was teed off on leaving the court, declaring “She’s playing in America and has all of the people for her.” The excitement of the Durr-King encounters throughout 1971 spice up the tour.

King later in the event “I’ve got my wheels back and feel great”

Total Attendance: 9,200 (Best=3,500 capacity for semis)

1R Val Ziegenfuss d. Judy Dalton 7-6 (5-1) 6-1

Billie Jean drew fellow top tenner Durr in the first round. She survives 4 match points, rallying from 1-4 to win 4 straight points, the last in ‘sudden death”. Opening day drew 1,200.. The second 1,300. Durr “I thought I had the match. But do you know what was going on in my mind when I was a point away from victory? I thought: the tournament is going to hate me for this.” When Durr floats a forehand long she sits down on the court in disgust-spent, she last set is a formality.

3,500 on hand for semis(a full house) and 3,200 for finals.Husband Larry was tournament director. BJ’s mom Betty was in charge of ticket sales. King’s first hometown events since 1961. The semis and final were indoors.

Casals: “The old Lady played great tennis. Long Beach should be proud of her.”

King fights back from 2-4 down in the third to overcome Melville. In the final Rosie served for the match at 6-5. Down 0-40, she got back to deuce, just two points from victory. Fate seemed to be against her, as King got a net cord at 3-2 in the tiebreak. Another net cord on match point provided her with the only break in the third set and victory.

A sell out crowd of 3,000 saw the final.

King suffers her second loss in two weeks to Durr. Otherwise, King was 29-5 against her lifetime. Durr gave King fits in 1971 though. She won 4 matches of 9 over King and held match points in 2 others. Even the matches she lost to King were usually close, winning a set in 3 of her 5 defeats.

Durr and Jones are foreign seeds.

Dalton is distracted by noisy and talking fans, at one point talking back to the crowd after hearing laughter .”I know I’m not playing very well, but you could help me”. A talking crowd also bothered Ann Jones. Inept ballboys and umpires who failed to tame the crowd were a feature of play.

Casals and King run their unbeaten streak as a team to 30-Rosie’s powerful and acrobatic shots have the crowd gasping as they beat Durr-Jones for the 7th straight time. On not being able to beat King this year: “People ask me if I have a psychological hangup—Right now I think she would kill Margaret Court-she’s playing that well.”

Casals easily beats Durr in the semifinals; aided by a few moonballs, not a usual Rosie tactic. But then Rosie has every shot in the book. Too many shots at times according to Durr, who remarks that “Rosie has so many shots she can hit that it’s too much for her own good-she hit the wrong one at the wrong time.

In the final King saves a break point early in the set and then breaks to go up 3-1

King on the final: “You see how one flaw can be fatal? She missed some crucial backhands when she needed them. One flaw like that will kill you every time.” King ties Pauline Betz’s record of 4 straight US Indoor titles. Billie Jean also declares her dodgy knees are good to go. "My knees feel great..I have that urge to be the best again."

Durr: “I need a rest. I’m not sure I’ll be back next year. After six years of this there has to be a place to stop.”

Fans stream into the event, one of the more established women's only stops on tour. 9,000 come in all, with sell outs of 2,000 on the last two days.

Notes: One of the weakest fields in years. Only Court was in the World top ten, though Goolagong would be in that group later in 1971. Only 4 foreigners showed, and one of those, Gail Lovera (nee Sherriff), was a born Aussie. The new Virginia Slims circuit began in January, taking away most possible foreign entries, and even class Aussies such as Kerry Melville Reid and Judy Tegart, both top tenners. A star was born in the women's final, as Evonne Goolagong stretched Marge to the limit, leading 5-2 in the third. At that point cramps became too much for the young lass, who lost the next 5 games. It was Court's second Aussie final win where her opponent was done in partly due to cramps, echoing the 1965 final. Afterwards Court declarewd, "I though I'd had it. I don't think I played particularly well, but when Evonne got the cramp I took the advantage."

Total Attendence was 45,000. The whole event lost $110,000. Gate receipts were $35,000.

Draw note:

Mrs Emmerson=Jill Emmerson, nee Blackman. [Per Andrew Tas] World of Tennis has Emmerson as the spelling. The Sydney Morning Herald also confirms this on March 11 1971.
Jill Blackman played after she got married into the mid 1970's mainly in and around Sydney.

The top prize of $5,000 makes this the richest "Women's Lob" event yet. Now that the USTA has backed down on banning the girls they are debating opening up the circuit to all commers such as Margaret Court and Patty Hogan.

The opening round match between newly married Nancy Richey Gunter and Ann Jones is a classic. The New York Times calls it "the strongest advertisement yet for the women's circuit. Jones proclaims it "would have brought the house down had it been at Wimbledon." For 2 hours 33 minutes the battle royal raged on. Gunter came within two points of victory in the second set tiebreak at 3-1. "But Mrs Jones won 4 consecutive points for the set. Two points were unbelievable winners, a lunging forehand passing shot down the line and a forehand crosscourt passing winner."

Bartkowicz pushed Casals, leading 7-6 4-3, with a point for 5-3. Peaches has groundstrokes "like a hammer", her two handed backhand still being a rarity. What she lacks is a volley, and the steam goes out of her enguine after she misses a sitter volley for 5-3.

Casals on Peaches: "She really runs you. You have to stay with her all the time and keep changing the pace to get out of a hitting groove."

King tops Graebner in the first round-this will be their last career meeting. Billie Jean's QF match is over so quickly she takes 10 minutes out to teach ball boys how to volley!

BJK got some resistance from Jones in the semis, but she runs away with the second set tiebreak bt hitting a slew of winners.

Before the final the King-Casals head to head read 6-0 for 1971 and 17 of their 21 meetings. King has won 36 of 38 matches up to this point.

With that kind of baggage Casals was given little chance, but a slightly off form King and Rosie's solid play produced an upset. Early in the match Billie Jean dumped four straight returns into the net, a sure sign she had lost some of form. Rosie kept charging the net. According to King. "We really didn't have many rallies."

Near the end the crowd of 1,300 wondered if Rosie could finish it off. After all, there is widespread belief that she pysches herself out in matches vs her good friend. Casals take is: "I don't think I get pysched out against Billie Jean. I think people just forget that she's a tough tennis player." This is Rosie's first win over King in 2 and half years. Their tournament head to head is now 17-5 in King's favor. Casals was in seventh heaven ,but threw in a comment suggesting King's involvement in promoting the event may have drained her of energy.

Billie Jean suggested later that poor lighting (several sources mention how hard it was to see) and light balls affected her performance. "I've lost in 3 tournaments this year, and in all 3 tournaments they've used lighter balls. I don't want to make any excuses though, because Rosie served very well. I just wasn't getting any balls back." There is also a suggestion that Billie jean just faces a jinx in New York. She hasn't won an event here since the 1967 US open, and the memory of her famous defeat to Nancy Richey back in 1968, where King had match points, lingers.
"I just can't explain it", she said of the jinx while signing autographs. "I guess I just played like an Old lady."

1,200 for the semis.

The Masters was initially cut from the Carribbean schedule this year until the Slims tour picked it up as stop. A minor men's event was also held, but it was the ladies who carried the event. Billie Jean gamely chose to support the event by rising from her sickbed to play, flying in from California the night before her opening match. Months later she revealed that her illness stemmed from an abortion.

When she came up against "tiny" Chris Evert it was all too much, and the King of the Slims tour was temporarily dethroned by the new queen of clay. Chris was so unknown at the start of the event that the New York Times calls her "Everett" when she upsets #3 seed Durr in the first round. In the end they get the spelling right!

2,000, the second largest Masters crowd ever, come out to watch King vs Evert. Billie Jean rallied from 104 down to take the first set tiebreak, but the marathon rallies start to take their toll. Chris won the second set 6-3. The ladies left the court for a customary 10 minute break between sets. King never came back, sending word she had leg cramps and was exhausted.

Julie Heldman knew she would play the villainess for the final. "Well, I'd better get fitted for horns as I'll be the villian for today." Julie aptly compared Evert's game to medieval siege warfare. Chris took Heldman apart. As an amateur Evert saves the tour $2,000 in cash, as she turns down the prize money.

The "tall blonde" world #1 takes home $2,956. Court said of Evonne" "I gave her no pace because she loves it when her opponent hits the ball hard. Also, I played her down the middle. She likes it when you allow her to make angles." After falling behind 2-3 Court never looked back, reeling off 11 of the next 12 games.

Evonne thrilled the crowd of 5,000 when she said she would return. The part-aborigine's decision to enter South Africa made headlines due to the nation apartheid policy. Tournament director Owen Williams declared, "She has been a great drawing card and a delightful person to have in the competition. We hope to have her back again next year."

Draw note: Lynette Montgomery went by "Lyn".

The $30,000 purse is a record for a women's event, eclipsing by far other records and ending the 14 week tour with a bang. The other stunner is the person who gets the record $9,000 for winning it all-none other than Ann Jones.

Conditions were rough all week, with winds regularly blowing hot air and sand up to 55 mph. In addition the high altitude and low humidity made balls fly.

Uniquely the #1 seed played the 16th ranked player, #2 vs #15, etc.

Match of the week was King-Gunter. Both women had had issues the past weeks-King was ill and Nancy was out with a tonsilectomy. Nancy had points for 4-2 in the third-Billie Jean hit winners on every one.

On the day of the semis the wind was so severe matches were delayed 45 minutes until the wind died down to 30 mph. Both were blowouts by King and Jones.

All week Jones had been singing "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane". Little wonder, as she's been playing week-in and week-out since January. At least Ann had her husband Pip along for company. A relaxed Jones (she knew she was flying back home win or lose) faced off vs a not so fiery Billie Jean. King didn't scream at herself once in losing. Conditions were again so miserable one player swore it was Bournemouth, not Vegas. Ann has won in the wind tunnel at Bournemouth many times. When Ann won a 15 deuce game at 4-4 in the second it was all over. The result carried over into the doubles, where Frankie Durr made incredible gets and King just hung her head.

Tour Money Totals after Vegas:

1. $33,500 Billie Jean King
2. $27,500 Rosie Casals
2. $27,500 Ann Jones

The final follows the pattern of comebcaks.Rosie leads 6-4 4-0 when Billie jean breaks the string on her wooden racquet. Billie Jean borrows one of Casals steel racquets. "Mrs King turned the match around after she changed from a wood to steel racquet." King won 13 of the next 15 games after the switch.

$100,000 Duel in Women's Tennis

Can any woman win $100,000 in a single year? It is the subject of a New York Times article on May 2.

Bilie Jean King has banked $37,000 so far this year and has made earning that amount a major goal. Margaret Court, with $20,000 to date, tells the New York Times, "She'll have to win it from me."

Mags doubts that it is possible. "You'd have to work like a bear, be in the best of condition and stay lucky." Court goes on to comment on her rivalry with King by throwing some shade in Billie Jean's direction: "Over the years I feel I have a definite edge in matches won, although if you ask me who had given me the most trouble on the court, I'd say it was Maria Bueno."
