DF: Helga Masthoff/Virginia Wade [1] d Lesley Bowrey/Helen Gourlay [2] 5-7 6-2 6-2

The women's prize money is one tenth of the men's. Virginia Wade finally gets her first major victory on European red clay over a denuded filed. Ginny relished her wins over clay court experts Hosel and Mastoff. Helga in particular was a bete noir, having won their last 3 encounters on dirt.

Wade's only scare all week came in the QF from Neumanova, a Czech gym teacher who serves first serves left handed and second serves right handed! Marie led 6-1 5-3, but Wade clawed back and easily won the tiebreak. At 4-5 in the third Wade held to stay in it, finally breaking serve at 5-5 in a game that went to deuce 9 times

Per the NYT both singles finals take place on May 10. Laver wins the top prize of $10,000 at the $45,000 event. Wade wins $1,000. Rod plays before 10,000 on the Centre Court at the Foro.

DF: Karin Benson/Mary Ann Eisel d Chris Evert/Jeanne Evert 2-6 7-5 7-5

Draw note: Eisel or Curtis?

Also called the Tulsa Clay Courts. A totally amateur event with no prize money. Mary Ann Eisel Curtis, the top seed, has loads of Evert trouble. 13 year old Jeannie Evert had 2 match points in the second set. After squeeking out a close win Curtis refused to speak with reporters.

In the final she ran into older sister Chrissie. Chris Had beaten Marcie Louie for the first time (the two defeats coming in junior play) in the semis. Evert had blown a lead vs Curtis in her first senior event back in 1969. There was no repeat this day, as she won 10 games in a row before Mary Ann even got on the scoreboard.

The strongest field of the year outside Wimbledon. Only Nancy Richey isn't here. Jill Cooper replaces #4 seed Ann Jones when the 1969 Wimbledon champ announces her pregnancy.

There was a lot of controversy swirling around the participation of the the Virginia Slims troupe. The event denied accepting the "One Dollar Dollies" en masse as a group, but this was clearly the case, and many non-Slims girls were upset at having to qualify. The British girls ranked 5 through 9 complained about not being accepted directly into the draw.

World #1 Margaret Court admitted over tea with British reporter that she felt the cold shoulder from the Slimsies, saying, "Some of them will not even speak to me now. It's stupid and childish." Court had considered joining the troupe, but backed off when Gladys Heldman told her of the number of events she would have to commit to. With almost all of the events in the US Margaret felt it was too much of a demand for me.

A decent prize money ration, with the men's winer getting $5,000 and the women's champion $3,000.

The German seeding committee favors native Frau's Masthoff and Scultze, but are proven right as Helga downs Casals to reach the final. Rosie now has a 0-4 record vs the crafty German with the log arms and legs. Mastoff is 3-1 on clay vs King too, including a QF surprise at the 1970 French.

Billie Jean plays well while Helga is affected by nerves as usual before a home crowd. Now the only major title to elude King is the French, which she will capture in 1972 (again beating Mastoff on clay). King ends up with a 4-4 career head to head vs Mastoff.

Karen Krantzcke, a world top tenner in 1970, comes down with hypoglycemia in Hamburg and flies home for treatment. She is off the tour for the rest of 1971.

Note: Neither Billie Jean King (nor Rosie Casals) appears to have taken part in the mixed doubles event.

FI: Kerry Melville [1] d. Kristy Pigeon 6-0 3-6 9-7

DF: Christine Janes/Nell Truman d. Jansone/Olga Morozova 6-3 9-7

*Kerry survived 3 match balls in the final.

Patti Hogan had an all too typical blow up in the semis. At the start of the third set she got into an argument with some spectators. She started to cry. The umpire asked her to restart playing twice. Hogan shouted "Throw me off if you want too!". After regaining her composure she lost it again in the 8th game, throwing her racquet and barely missing a ball girl.

A good result for Wendy Gilchrist, an Aussie currently living in New York.

Draw note: The #6 seed must have pulled out-as Casals quarter is lacking a seed.

One of the best fields all year.

Christine Truman is no longer 16 as she was in 1959 and ranked #2 in the world. As Mrs Janes she still draws the shrieking schoolgirls however. They come out to support her in droves in her latest comeback attempt. Loud demonstrations of support greet every forehand belted into the corners for a winner. "I thought I played well", said first round victim Gail Hansen, "but she hits the ball so hard."

Court wins ugly over Goolagong, getting revenge for the Wimbledon final the previous week. The bright sunshine affects both ladies, especially Mrs Court on her serve. In all she serves 24 (One account even says 25) double faults. "That must be some kind of record", she mused afterwards. In all there were 11 service breaks.

Court takes home $1,200, while men's winner Cliff Drysdale hauls in double that amount at $2,400.

From ‘The Irish Times’, July 12, 1971

By Vera McWeeney

Mrs Margaret Court’s share, although she reached three finals and won one, was £500 for beating new Wimbledon champion, Miss Evonne Goolagong, in the singles, and £50 and £25 for being runner-up in the other two events.

The match between Mrs Court and Miss Goolagong featured some great tennis, but also some desultory stuff in which the Wimbledon champion played at times like a tired, overwrought little girl. This replay of the recent Wimbledon final was what the crowd really had come to see and while one felt it would have preferred to see the 19-year-old part-Aboriginal charmer reaffirm her superiority over Mrs Court, the applause for the older girl’s win was generous for she played some magnificent shots – curbed what must have been intense worry about her fifteen doubles faults – and altogether went about the match like a real champion.

Miss Goolagong’s happy smile never faltered. Her backhand volleys were a delight to watch, but the same stroke on the forehand side brought about her defeat as she could not control it all. Winning or losing she exuded cheerfulness and one feels that when she begins to care deeply about success or failure, no one will beat her, but tennis will have lost a refreshingly happy personality.

Mrs Court lost the first game of the match, in which she projected three double faults. The fact that despite saddling herself with this handicap there were two deuces in that game should have given us the clue that she was all out for revenge. She won the next five games, losing no more than two points in any of them, and then indulged in another spell of double-faulting before winning the set 6-3.

The next set was Miss Goolagong’s all the way, with that beautiful backhand reeling off the winners and Mrs Court contributing to this success with three double faults in the last game. All this seemed to point to a super final set, but all the drive seemed to have left Miss Goolagong, and with Mrs Court becoming more commanding and pinning the younger girl to the baseline with the sheer force of her shots, she reeled off the match-winners comfortably, losing only four points in the last four games.

An incredibly strong field. With the top 5 players the field is arguably stronger than all the slams this year with the exception of Wimbledon. The top knotch field even results in more prize money for the women-almost unheard of in 1971.

Goolagong has a post Wimbledon let down, going down to Patti Hogan in the QF. On the second show court King had a classic duel vs Wade. Ginny claws back from 1-5 down in the first, saves a set point at 7-8, then holds a set point of her own at 10-9 up. King finally won it in straight sets after 34 games.

Billie Jean turned right around and spoiled Margaret Court's 29 birthday. King again saves a set point at 30-40 4-5 in the second set . At 5-6 Court saves two match points and has 3 game points. The pivotal 5 deuce gamefinally ended in King's favor. After the match Court learns her mother has passed away and drops out of the doubles final. Mags soon learns she is pregnant and drops off the tour altogether for the rest of 1971. Oddly enough there had been rumors in the press of King and Court possibly teaming up in the US Doubles together. The rivals never did play doubles with each other in a major.

The final was poorly played. King edged Casals as usual, but neither woman played up to her usual standard. Rosie looked set to mount a possible comeback in set two but gets unnerved by a foot fault call.

Rothmans must have been pleased with attendance. Crowds of over 20,000 came through the overcrowded gates.

She serves 3 double faults to lose serve at 6-7. Dalton breaks to go up 2-0 in the third. She can't get to Pattis' short shots however, and falls 6-4.

The only WT/Slims Tour outside of the US is a wild success-and in Italy of all places.

The early upset belongs to Gail Chanfreau. Gail often falls victim to caramps in heat. Against Francoise Durr she overcame the hot conditions to save 2 match points. Clay court maven Helga Masthoff used all her tricks and wiles to down Julie Heldman, Billie jean King, and Rosie Casals to claim the top prize of $4,400. She held on trrailing King 2-6 2-4 and again at 1-4 and 5-6 in the third.

Helga also came back in the final. She was down 6-3 3-1. Some in the crowd started to leave, but then she came back to win the middle set 6-4. At 2 all in the third the match was suspended due to darkness. Rosie had a flight to make the next day for the event in Houston. She wanted the prize money to be divided. a talk with Billie Jean convinced her to change her mind, and the women went on court Monday morning at a mind boggling 8 AM. Helga quickly won 4 of the next 5 games to win the biggest prize of her career to date.

Full crowds (1,500) and national TV for the semis and final.

Prize money had originally been a paltry $2,500 earlier in the year. When Margaret Court got wind of the prize money on the Slims circuit she changed her plans to play Cincy. The USTA and ILTF then threatened to ban her. Court basically told them to go ahead. In the end a pregnant Court dropped off the circuit and the USTA ponied up more money to get a decent field.

Wade won $1,800 for taking home the title.

Draw note: #8 seed in Wade's half of the draw either missing/withdrew/ or non existent.

Biggest news of the week goes to Margaret Court. She originally had scheduled a press conference in New York to announce she was joining the Virginia Slims circuit. Instead the prolific Aussie announces she will not play Forest Hills and is dropping off the tour due to a pregnancy. Court states she return to the tour in some form after having her child. When reminded that Ann Jones also pulled out due to being pregnant she quiped, "The Courts have to keep up with the Joneses."

The draw is presented here in actual draw order.

Goolagong wins a 1R match with a bizarre ending. She shakes hands when she leads Subirats 6-3 in the tiebreak. Apparently the umpire thought the breaker ended at 6 points won and neither player contradicted him! That's how new the tiebreak is to most. Some minutes later the mistake is realized and both girls go out on court to play 1 more point.

Virginia Wade looked set to win her semi vs Evonne-she led 6-1 2-1 and 40-15. Then the wheels came off, perhaps partly due to a left shoulder injury she suffered the night before in doubles.

Durr originally planeed on playing in Indy but demurred when she heard about the humidity. The crafty Frenchwoman beats #2 seed Casals and a jaded top seed Goolagong. Evonne just wants to go home, stating after her loss, "After Wimbledon I wanted to rush home and see everybody...I was practically there tonight."

Evonne and her coach Vic Edwards are taking some heat for skipping the upcoming US Open, particularly after making the hop across the Atlactic to come here to Canada so close to Forest Hills.

Durr doesn't drop serve again after trailing 1-3. Knowing Evonne likes pace, she fed the Aussie a diet of slow spins.

Durr's engagement to Virginia Slims' Bill Cutler may be why she's doing so well of late. Frankie upsets Casals and King for the second time year on clay in a Slims evnet, repeating her WLOD tournament win. Billie Jean had to overcome set points vs Hunt and again in winning over Gunter. Billie Jean and Nancy's semi was moved indoors due to rain at 6-6 in the first set. King rallied from 2-5 down in the second set.

Capacity crowds of 2,500 came our on the last 3 days.

4,000 watch as Chris rips through Wade in 40 minutes. Virginia made numerous errors. In the words of World Tennis, "It was one of her bad, bad days." Evert stayed calm through Wade's grumpy complaints and the delay with the court literally coming apart at the seams. The rubberized surface had to be repaired twice in the first set after sections of it came up on Wade's side. Evert's win clinches the Cup for the US. The competition cements Evert's status as an up and coming star.

Newport native son Jimmy Van Alen is aptly on hand for a final featuring two tiebreaks. Allen was the inventor of the tiebreak.

The two hour 2 minute final is a classic. Durr fought off 8 match points before yielding. The stylish Frenchwoman foughjt off two mps at 4-5 in the second set and 2 at 4-5 in the third. At 5-6 in the third she saves 2 more. Finally she was down 2-4 in the tiebreak. Fighting back, she leveled to 4 all.

The crowd goes wild the reaches sudden-death point, a match point for both women. Kerry won the sudden death point by coming in a Durr's serve. Kerry hit it into the backhand corner then hit a forehand volley crosscourt winner into the open court.

This is the only final in women's tennis history decided on a sudden death point.

Per the NYT the final was August 30.

A pregnant Ann Jones calls lines. Her husband pip in the manager of the Pro Tour.

SF: Cancelled at SF stage.

After her opening match vs Stove (who often gave Chris trouble on grass but never beat her) Evert easily won her other matches. Chris had to turn down the top prize of $1,500.

Wade breaks her ankle due to nasty spill-she's out of the US Open though seeded #3 there. Bowrey has to return home when she learns of her father's death and will miss the US Open as well.
Gourlay lost only 21 points in a 6-1 6-1 drubbbing of Joyce Williams.

Hogan's temper hurt her-she went down in a 2 hour 20 minute match.

Check seeding. Was Stove the #4 seed or Evert?
