Sonay makes it THREE British women in R2!

Yup, she even struggled for a bit with moving beyond 35k - losing in 60k / 100k events. Then she seems to have clicked at Wimbledon, now she's consistently picking up a win or two on the WTA. Picking up clay wins at Madrid, Rome and now the French.

Following on from her 250k title, a r16 at Indian Wells and the r3 at Wimbledon from qualifying. It's been quite the year for her!

Only got to see the last few games but the dismal year of Erika Andreeva hit a new low today, losing the first nine games of the match before finally getting on the scoreboard. But she was unable to trouble Kartal for long even after that due to her propensity to spray errors and hit few winners. This was a very easy win for a very competent Brit, who was remarkably unexcited at the win, like it was an every day thing for 3 Brits to make the second round of RG. When was the last time that happened - the 1920s?? ;)

I didn't see the match, but peeked at the stats mid-match.

Just before winning her first game, Erika was running at 35% first serves, and 4 double faults, She must have served a lot better thereafter, because she ended with 50% and 5 DFs, but the damage was well and truly done.

I doubt Sonay cares much about the other two Brits in R2, but in any case she's normally very low key.

A nice, humble British player. More of this please! 😊

I watched Erika Andreeva's match against Sonay Kartal and I didn't recognize last year's player. Erika, who made very few mistakes before, actually made many, far too many, as if she no longer knows how to play. It's not an injury problem, she ran and played normally. She was injured, but it's over. We could also see Kartal's face, looking surprised at Erika's level. I already said that I thought her problem came from her coach, I still think so. Why doesn't she change coaches with whom she has only had bad results? With her current level, she can't beat a top 200 player, whereas before she was able to beat top 20 players, there is a big problem. I thought the problem could also come from the family, not from Mirra, but from a conflict with one of the parents who imposed this coach on her.
