And add yet another top D1 college graduate that actually lands well on the pro tour, but has no patience or will to grind beyond 1 year at most. Pretty disappointing to see, liked Daria's game...
The benefit of having a university degree is that these players have more options than the girls going into debt and sharing rooms at Monastir 15k

It’s easy for us watching from distance to say tennis is more fun, work hard and have patience. First of all, traveling and competing week in week out asks for some cash. If they don’t win enough matches on pro tour by mid 20s, it’s not hard to understand why motivation drains over time. Add injuries, recovery time and surgeries to that. We all know that tennis isn’t profitable at all for a vast majority of players outside top 200. All these girls started playing tennis with a big goal, hoping to make a good living off of that profession. I don’t think that finding yourself stuck in lower ITF tournaments after a decade of pro tennis and presumably two decades of training for success and money is particularly encouraging for any of them.

I briefly dated a guy who plays lower ITFs and I know how it is. By the time you hit 26/27, if you haven’t come close to at least top 200-250, you continue playing only because you really love the game, for traveling, for the people who are your circle, and because that’s what you did your whole young adult life. But they do start considering other options around that age. There’s not much money in that situation, more or less they just try to avoid being in minus.

So we do have someone in the closet? :oh:
(I think the real question is how many...)
It’s honestly more common than you think. I know of several in the 500-700 range, and it’s not that big a deal.
Jõao Reis da Silva (ATP #231) came out about a year ago and there wasn't much fuss about it at all.

This guy is still in the closet which was part of the reason we couldn’t last, it became a little too tiring and disappointing for me to pretend we are just sport buddies in every situation with other people. 😅 It’s not uncommon though, most of the athletes try to maintain the alpha male status around their people and ask you to understand :)

But I met other tennis players in that period of time and some of them aren’t really hiding it at all, at least for the friends and tennis circles. They won’t post it on social media or brag about it but some of them are really open about their sexuality.

Not sure if this was mentioned in 2024, but Olivia Tjandramulia is now studying at university and is listed as ex-pro tennis player.

Mirjam Shapovalova (Björklund) says her pro tennis career is over.

---

Denis Shapovalov, currently ranked 26th in the world, has advanced to the next tennis tournament in Tokyo – but for Mirjam Shapovalova, it's all over. She is ending her tennis career.

"Yes, I’ve put the racket on the shelf. I feel like I’ve achieved and experienced so much in my career, even though I didn’t reach the ranking that many people think is the only thing that matters—which is often top 10, top 50, or something like that. I’ve qualified for Grand Slams on all surfaces, played against the world number two at Wimbledon, represented Sweden from junior to senior level, beaten top-30 players, and experienced so many other amazing moments."

A large part of the decision was due to the lingering effects of a cyst that Mirjam Shapovalova had surgically removed from her neck at the beginning of last year.

"When it took significantly longer to recover from the surgery—which affected my hormones and general well-being—I basically had to start over in terms of rankings. And I feel like I have so many other ideas and things I want to explore, so I decided to love the sport from the sidelines instead. You only get one life, and I’ve already dedicated 25 years to tennis."

She will now be working with her husband’s team (and, of course, taking care of the couple’s dog, Yatzy!) while exploring new opportunities. Nothing is decided yet, but starting her own business is something that has always interested Mirjam Shapovalova.

No surprise about Shapovalova retiring. Never found her footing when she came back in late 2024. Then it was obvious there was no meaningful long-term comeback from her when she started using last protected rankings on the main tour qualies for quick bucks.

Kind of a shame, it really felt like she could have (at least temporarily) reached top 100 with more grind/luck, but alas.
