Coming fresh from a 4R appearance in Rome, Emma Raducanu will play another clay event a week before Roland Garros, for the first time.

The Brit is currently 42 in the live rankings and likely hoping that she can get into the seeding range for the next grand slam, Wimbledon, for the first time since 2022. She is also the second highest ranked player from the United Kingdom, behind Katie Boulter, and could overtake the crown of the best British player in the world if she reaches the QF in Strasbourg.

Gauff’s style goes against all Emma’s weaknesses, especially those high bouncing balls and kick serve. Emma doesn’t have enough raw power to hit through Gauff and is unlikely to outmaneuver Coco on slow clay as the American can drag the rallies forever. She would’ve had more opportunities on hard and especially grass which is why the scoreline in their previous match played in Australia was closer in the second set. Add on that that Coco had a very good day on serve and Emma couldn’t really execute one of her trademark strengths, the return. Had Coco had one of her bad serving days, then it would get closer. I was quite optimistic about Emma’s chances before the match mainly because I thought Gauff is still struggling on serve but she turned up pretty clutch on that shot.
