Elena Vesnina complains about WTA favouritism towards Qinwen over Timofeeva

We all know that Zheng is way more famous and WTA really wants her to happen but should they be more equal at the time of promoting their players? At least when both win a title of same category? In this case they only posted a random post about Budapest winners (doubles and singles in the same IG post) while Qinwen has 3 posts after her win with a lot pics.

Ofc Elena is most probably complaining because Maria is Russian, but I've seen this happening other times on WTA socials. I honestly don't think it's that difficult to post more and promote other players as well. What do you think?

Timo has to get in line.... behind Fruity and the Beast that got robbed by the WTA last year just to promote this gal.

Have come around on her but yeah.. that still was complete bullshit man... sure they are pushing her hard .. and as we have seen it has done Qinwen no favors as the hype and expectations did go over the edge of the cliffs of sanity. Not just here at TF.

The thing is both won a 250 title and they didn't post a single pic of Maria's trophy ceremony. Only a small video of the MP. I don't mind them promoting Qinwen but it's pretty disrespectful for the other winner of the week. And also for the tournament, Budapest was barely promoted (compared to Palermo). I doubt they want to keep their lincense for next year.

And as I said, posting a tweet or a IG post it's not that difficult.

The WTA are disaster promoters, but at the same time I don’t see what value there would be right now in pushing Timofeeva for the following reasons:

1) She just won probably the weakest tour event so far this year, and what are the chances she’ll even back this up versus falling back into obscurity?

2) It’s not like Fanny Stollar won and we were denied all of the glam trophy pics.

3) Unless they’re at the very top of the game, and/or an IMG darling, the WTA is not going to be falling over itself to promote Russian and Belarusian players in this climate. Whatever about the political stance, there’s just no commercial viability for sponsors, so the tour has zero to gain from it.

Qinwen would be a big star if she managed to replicate even half of Li’s success so of course she is being hyped. I was actually pleasantly shocked to see her being pushed to much on the Instagram page. Did their social media manager wake up from a coma or something?

Agreed with all of this, but especially point 3. Not only did a Russian win, but she beat an Ukrainian player in the final. Maybe the WTA might not have liked those optics.

Furthermore, let's not forget this tournament was pretty much a

from the get go. The whole Amarissa Kiara/Shuai situation got the tournament a lot of negative media coverage, and then there was that racist statement posted by the tournament's official facebook page, that led to the WTA releasing a statement on twitter denouncing racism in all its forms.

I suspect the WTA was just relieved this tournament is over, and wants to pretend it never happened lol.

It would have been so easy to post something to celebrate Maria's victory, and it's dumb that they didn't (I totally agree with Lena V's point), but I also do feel this tournament was a special mess all-around with some very unusual circumstances.

Doesnt sound like Vesnina, she is pretty easy going. Timofeeva never was in a main draw before, she was 250.
She shouldnt get too much attention until she can back it up
Andreeva gets a lot of attention without a title, so I dont think anyone believes this is a real issue

Vesnina is not asking for much, only for a post with the ceremony pics or at least smth better than a video of the MP. :ROFLMAO:

It's pretty reasonable but this is WTA so it must be hard for them. Too much work.

WTA are definitely the worst sports organization in terms of producing content. I just went on their YouTube page and from what I can tell, they didn't post ANY highlights this past week, and there were two WTA events going on.

I have no idea what these people are doing. It literally wouldn't cost them anything at all to pay a solid group of people to revitalize their content strategy. And having better content will funnily enough have better long-term financial implications for the Tour than spending tens of millions of dollars a year to achieve equal prize money.

Possibly the same reason there’s not a flag against her name.

Mirra Andreeva doesn't have the flag either but you can be sure WTA would post 500 pictures & tweets if she wins her first WTA title

Vesnina knows they're both enjoying their titles
Maria doesnt need the attention Andreeva is getting, she's still 130, she needs to keep winning
Andreeva is already in the money, both need to improve

But seriously... what is WTA's Social Media Team getting paid to do? Or is it just one random Intern doing it alone, cause that's what it seems like.

Just randomly checked:

YouTube: No video in the past two weeks and no highlights in the past week... when there were two WTA tournaments. Why are they so unbothered to post highlights from their own events

WTA Insider Podcast: Literally only Champions Corner episodes that last no more than 10 minutes. So much wasted potential here...

TikTok: Only 13K followers and ZERO posts in the last three years.

Making the content isn't even hard, it's literally the bare minimum and every other sports organization is doing this successfully but WTA are more interested in releasing mental health docs nobody is watching and releasing a roadmap of how to get to Equal Prize Money when ATP have a 20-year-old #1 more popular than their entire Top 10 put together and will literally obliterate them in prize money again very soon, rendering their equal prize money plans futile and worthless.

I just really don't get it.

WTA doesn't generally cover WTA250's in any decent capacity, if there is a top10 or one of the it players they will but what I've noticed is they will cover up to 2 players if any. Maybe that's why it coast an arm and a leg to get an extra top10 at an MM like 250k+ USD because they have to get out of bed and promote.

Bogota was running with Mertens and she went first round, so after that no highlights except half hearted ones during the last 2-3 matches. Birmingham had Venus so they were obviously going to cover that, and they decided to cover Penko as well, despite Babs calls for big 4 and being talked about more they didn't listen and the only reason she got a highlight is because she made the final.

Must be one of the reasons. IMG actually signed Qinwen when she was only 13 years old, the same age as when they signed Agassi and Sharapova. They already recognised her talent and potential 7 years ago yet a few self appointed experts in TF think she is way less talented and has way less potential than Madison Keys. Too funny

Qinwen is a top 30 player with a very promising future who has already had major buzz behind her last year.

Timofeeva has barely had any wins (if any at all) before winning this tournament.

Who do you think is gonna get more attention??? Like duh.

Now if this was Potapova and Yue Yuan and Yuan got much more attention then yeah people can complain.

#22 ·
Nobody is saying Timofeeva should get more attention than Zheng. It would be ridiculous. Vesnina's saying that Maria deserved more than just a small video of her MP in a post where they also included the doubles winners, like for example some pics of her trophy ceremony.

Maybe like this one:

It's great that they're promoting Qinwen but posting more content about others wouldn't be a hard task for WTA.

A WTA player who is -

·A 20years old Chinese girl
·Signed with IMG when she was 12
·The youngest Chinese player to win a title and be in the top20
·Who already has five endorsement/sponsors before winning a title
·On three magazine covers already

Everyone in the tennis industry should know why she is important and worth promoting
I adore QZ, and I’m happy to see her getting promoted. But no one is saying she shouldn’t be. I think the complaint is that other winners (and players) should be getting SOME attention, too, especially because one more IG post is doing less than the bare minimum. Social media is free. Would it have killed anyone at the WTA to acknowledge another maiden title winner more intentionally?

The perfect person to head the WTA marketing department is Johanna Konta, she had little to work with and made a superstar out of Sakkari, the possibilities would be endless.

I dont believe Vesnina would be upset about media coverage of a player ranked 130
Timofeeva cant even play a major unless she can get thru qualies.
But the best way to handle this is to get into the top 100 and get in major main draws
Lets see if Maria will become a relevant player

This sounds like a bad joke. From not being allowed at Wimbledon to main poster promotional stars of WTA. See how their demands grow? I’m sure their leaders are proud.
