Tennis Europe Junior Tour Awards

In what is an unprecedented feat in the history of the #TEJT, one player will claim two singles accolades. Alena Kovackova had a stellar year, ending 2022 reigning both the girls’ 16&U and 14&U rankings.

GIRLS’ 14 & UNDER: ALENA KOVACKOVA (Czech Republic)

As top seed at the Les Petits As Super Category, Kovackova was upset in a three-set semi-final by the eventual champion, Julia Stusek. The German’s upset of Kovackova was a catalyst for Czech’s unrivalled 2022 campaign where she dominated across both age groups and all surfaces. Her astounding 48/1 win/loss record over the year is a testament to solid and smart, yet calm and steady play. Tournament wins in the age group:
  • Christmas Cup, Khimki (Super Category)
  • Taça Internacional, Maia (Super Category)
  • European Junior Championships, Most
GIRLS’ 16 & UNDER: ALENA KOVACKOVA (Czech Republic)

In this category, Kovackova remained undefeated all year. Having qualified for the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in both age groups, Kovackova elected to play against her older peers, winning the jewel in the crown on the #TEJT and capping off an absolutely sensational season. Tournament wins:
  • Tennisline Cup, Milovice (Category 2)
  • Joan Mir, Torelló (Category 1)
  • Sanchez Academy Youth Cup, Barcelona (Category 1)
  • Internacional Nacho Juncosa, Vic (Category 1)
  • Tennis Europe Junior Masters, Monte Carlo

Alena won against Sol Larraya Guidi 6-4 7-5, but it could've been even more one-sided: she was 4-0 in the 2nd set. :cheer:

Alena lost in singles, but it was expected: her opponent is 3 years older and is in great form. I didn't watch that match, but I watched the doubles and was very impressed: both Alena and Laura were very impressive, especially considering that they aren't as physically mature as Klugman for example.
In R2 they'll face either the 2nd seeds or Klugman.

I mentioned the match here:

Alena is bold, creative and overall very fun to watch but she didn't have enough power to get through the very mobile and error-free Peruvian girl, she was unplayable today.

Does anyone know how long have Kovackova and Samsonova played together? The way Alena controls the point from the baseline, allowing Laura to poach to close the point, really reminded me of a different pair of Czech players.

Today Alena was broken in her 1st service game, but then held serve 4 times in a row at 0  (before losing the first 2 points on serve in the match TB). :cheer:

(6) Grant/Ngounoue d. Kovackova/Samsonova 6-0 3-6 10-7 :uncheer:

The bagel in the 1st set doesn't describe it accurately: while in the first 3 games Alena and especially Laura struggled a lot with the Americans' power, in the 4th game they were broken from 40-15, and in the 5th they couldn't break from 15-40. They lost the first 3 games in the 2nd set too, before bagelling their opponents back.
In the TB, the critical points were on 5*-2 and the very long rally on 7-7*.

Grant/Ngounoue didn't lose more than 5 games in any other match. Alena and Laura were the only ones that challenged them, and almost won.
