Summary:
The home advantage was on full display early on as 48 year old Maud Galtier, grandmother of two, beats Ruia Morrison serving underhanded.
In the 3R Suzy Koromozy's hopes of repeating her Italian win are dashed when she goes over on an ankle vs Egyptian Betsy Abbas. Abbas gets another retirement when Aussie Mary Hawton also turns her ankle 3 points into their 4th round match. This Abbas becomes the first Egyptian female in a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Through this carnage came serve and volley stylist Darlene Hard. The #6 seed survives a roller coaster ride to win the world's premier clay court event. No champion has ever had such a perilous journey. Miss Hard lost 3 sets and 66 games in her 6 matches. She was only a game from defeat vs. Italian Lazzarion when Silvana had to retire after becoming faint-the Italian up 5-4. Then Hard dodged two match points vs. Schuurman in the quarters.
Ironically her easiest match was vs. world #1 Maria Bueno in the semis. Hard "surprised a capacity crowd of 14,000 with the easy manner in which she defeated Miss Bueno."
Tiny Mexican Yola Ramirez was the finalist from the bottom half of the draw. Yola nervously starts the final with a double fault to immediately hand the blond Californian a break. The tiny Yola rallies to 4 all in the second to make it close but gets broken. With a powerful smash the 6th seeded Hard becomes a surprise winner.
