This event allows the women to get in valuable prep work on Har-Tru, the slow surace that is controversial among many of the women because they say it slows down the women's game. Many believe Billie Jean King retired at Wimbledon rather than finish at Forest Hills on clay. Margaret Court says the surface is good only for Chris Evert. Virginia Wade declares in a presser that, "clay bores me to death." The one big name missing here is Evonne Goolagong, who is involved in the Wrold Team Tennis finals.
Brazilian Born German Iris Riedel surprises herself and specatators by taking out seeded Julie Heldman. Until 3 weeks ago Iris had been off the tour for two years. Her time away consisted of "sailing in Sweden after leaving Germany. Anything but tennis. Here I've been going to the beach every day rather than practice. And as soon as my match is over here, i stay at a private family's home rather than stay here and talk tennis, tennis, tennis the way other players do. I can't stand that."
Iris gave up on the tour in 1973 due to the travel cost and what she called the lonely and souless nature of the tour. She hopes to become and interpreter (Riedel speaks Spanish, Portugeuse, English, and German) but admits she is lazy.
Wade clawed her way to the finals, citing "jelly legs" and the surface for her close call with Fernandez. She won her quarterfinal in a close one as well, emitting what the Times called "cat-like screams", throwing her racquet to the ground, and driving one ball into the backstop.
Top prize was $14,000, with $7,000 going to the finalist.
Evert demolishes Wade in a 50 minute final-it is her 75th consecutive win on clay. Evert later said, "I think I caught Virginia on a bad day." Error after error flew off Wade's racquet in the dull final. Chris made only 7 errors in the whole match.
Attendance:
400 are on hand for Court's 1R match. 2,000 watch Evert/Navratilova beat Chris's sister Jeanne and Jausovec in doubles. 3,500 show for the semis.
