I have a limited pass (down to seven shots, so choose wisely) to the Los Angeles Times historical archives, ranging from December 4, 1881 to December 31, 1984. I am open to suggestions, especially from the people working on the biography and encyclopedia projects, about what to extract. Please see http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/faq.html for what types of things are included in the article image archives. You have until December 31 to reach a consensus.

Tempting Mrs A!

I will think on it.

What does 7 shots mean-7 searches-or 7 search windows of time?

And thank you for sharing-it is very generous of you:)
I can have access to 7 complete historic article images and have until December 31 to do it.

Searching is free at http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/advancedsearch.html and select the "12/4/1881 - 12/31/1988 (Historic Article Images)" option.

Do not be concerned about anything after January 1, 1985 in the date range.

Clearly, one month is not a lot of time to decide, and the abstracts are often extremely brief to nonexistent. Sutton, Lenglen, Moody, Marble, Connolly, Gibson, King, Bueno, Court, Goolagong, early Evert and Navratilova. Overhanded serves, Gibson plays Wimbledon, King vs. Riggs, the formation of the WTA, obituaries. Marriage records to possibly help identify your mystery Mrs. John Doe players. Tournament draws/results. It's a lot to wade through, but there is probably something y'all can think of that is obviously necessary to the various history projects.

Hi Ms. Anthropic, I always treat Encyclopedia / Biographies threads as supportive to the main work of tennis historians active here - to the yearly results threads - so I think you could use these articles to give as a detailed account of some rare Californian event, for example: the Los Angeles county tournament played in 1931.

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/doc/162465085.html?FMT=CITE&FMTS=CITE:AI&type=historic&date=Jul+28,+1931&author=&pub=Los+Angeles+Times+(1923-Current+File)&edition=&startpage=&desc=Other+27+--+No+Title

I'm sure 7 articles would cover a whole week-long event, and would give us not only completely new results, but also some other little notes and trivia, and would work just like those interesting collections of articles that you compile in your other threads :)

Best regards,
LKK

Well thought out LKK.

How about the 1920 Pacific Coast event? That would be my pick-but whatever you uncover will be great Mrs A!

Circa June 13-18,*Pacific Coast Chamapionships, Berkeley, California, US (Hard)
FI: Helen Baker d. Helen Wills 7-5 6-1
DF: Helen Baker/Helen Wills d. Anna McCune/Lucy McCune 8-6 6-4

Infer 3 wins before FI.
Record 3-1

The historians know where the serious gaps in the records are, so I'll leave it to you all to decide. Tick, tick, tick...

Also added recently to my online access (but possibly only for a trial period -- things come and go seemingly at random at times) are the Hartford Courant historic article images from 1765 to 1984.

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/courant/advancedsearch.html?pqatl=pqcom

I also have access to historic article images from the Philadelphia Inquirer (1861-1922), The Charlotte (North Carolina) News (1889-1922), The Charlotte Observer (1892-1933), The Kansas City (Missouri) Star (1881-1949), The Baltimore Sun (1837-1922), The Miami Herald (1911-1926), The Evening News of San Jose, California (1884-1922), and The San Jose Mercury News (1862-1922)

Unfortunately, I can't find any public search engines for most of these. The Baltimore Sun is the exception:

Rollo, I checked all four names of the finalists in a search engine of that newspaper, and no record was found - the Pacific Coast tournament was held in Berkeley, and probably there was no detailed account of it in the Los Angeles Times that year... If we want to get full results of any tournament, it's safer to choose some event played in Los Angeles.

Hi, Ms. Anthropic, I think the Hartford Courant historic articles would let us find some rare information on the Connecticut State or the New England Championships. Here are some examples:

Interestingly, even the San Jose Mercury News and the Evening News have no information about this tournament other than the California Lawn Tennis Association requested the USLTA to schedule the annual East versus West regional tournament to be held in June so the eastern players could enter the PCC. And, hilariously, a blurb from July 4 in the Mercury that entries for the PCC close on June 17 and the tournament begins on June 19. Bad typo or general confusion?

I've checked, and there's no way to attach a PDF file in a private message here :( You could add it to your message as a link, but it probably won't work if your file needs a password to be viewed... Rollo, is it OK if Ms. Anthropic posts PDF files here as attachments ?

I think it may be both: a typo and a confusion, hehe. I'm not an expert, but in those old times there was also the Pacific Coast men doubles only event that usually started a couple of weeks after the end of all other regular events of the Pacific Coast tournament. So both dates (mid June and mid July) for the PCC could be right...

The problem with posting the PDFs as attachments is that I'm sure there is some limit on the size of the individual file and how much space I can use in total. These particular ones from the Hartford Courant aren't huge, but there will be some that are -- to say nothing of how badly and quickly I will blow the overall budget Vertical Sports gives us for attachments by the time we've sifted out everything of value.

Even more hilarious: A blurb in the Mercury on June 9 that mentions the "sectional tennis doubles championships of the Pacific coast to be held in Los Angeles July 1[?]..."

On June 13 in the Mercury there is a quick mention of six (presumably male) players from Stanford entered in the PCC, again stated to begin on June 19. But no mention of the tournament on the expected dates (June 19-25); Wimbledon gets some coverage, so there is nothing that is obviously dropped from the archive.

Nice initiative, hopefully it can help add some missing info to our tournament or year archives.

On a similar note I have full access to the British Newspaper Archive. I'm sure there are others here who have that as well but still if anyone wants me to look up any BNA tennis info just drop me a private message.
