Maria Sharapova heads the field in Yogi Bear Stockholm Challenge

Empty seat?!!?!? Where is Maria Sharapova?!?!?!

Today Maria Sharapova was supposed to be at a live press conference to open the official Yogi Bear Challenge 2003. Unfortunately she did not show up today as she had prior arrangements to practice for the tournament that is coming up after her disspointing loss to Alicia Molik in the Australian Open.

After her loss to Alicia, we saw a side of Maria that noone has seen before, she was very outspoken about her loss and very rude towards the tournament officials. Maria did apologise saying "Im very sorry to the tournament bosses in the FLT and my fellow tour members".

Despite having a poor run in the previous 2 tournaments, Maria Sharapova is still number 1 seeded and expects to play well and make it through to the final where she will win. Maria has a hard first round match against Tamarine from Thailand, but SHarapova has been tipped to take the match out.

Mr. Yogi Bear, supervisor of the tournament : "Welcome everybody! All players here are so lovely (maybe except one tall girl...) - hope that I won't fall in love with any girl... But good looking is not the most important - your game and behaviour on court, yeah, it's a key. Good luck everybody, show your best! (I do not mean bust, Mary  )

After the intense pressure and intense heat of the Australian Open, the FLT tour moves to the clay courts of Scandanavia, for the Yogi Bear Stockholm Challenge

This looks like being the most exciting event of the year so far with Australian Open Champion and runner up Evelyne Van Hyfte and Gabriela Sabatini, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and the Australian Open doubles queens Anna Kournikova and Jelena Dokic all competing at the Bjorn Borg Stadium.

Van Hyfte will be the player to beat, but her confidence will be running high. Gabriela Sabatini's stylish game will suit Sweden's slow clay, but she faces a tough first rounder against the flashy Mary Pierce. The outspoken and glamourous Maria Sharapova has already put together a huge army of fans as well as good results and is the top seed but also has a tough opener against Thai star Tammy Tanasugarn. After a disappointing Australian Open, Martina Hingis will be aiming to show she has what it takes to really challenge the top names, but she will not look forward to playing doubles partner Maggie Maleeva in round one. All in all it should be a great week of tennis.

Sharapova finds time to practice despite being ill

Maria Sharapova still practices and stretches despite suffereing from a virus

Maria Sharapova has "next" written all over her. "She won't just be a professional," said tennis guru and academy founder Nick Bollettieri of the then 13-year-old, "she will be one of the best in the world."

Blonde, attractive and strikingly tall, her agents are poised to help her reap the endless marketing opportunities. The tools are gradually being honed. Her path seems certain: greatness beckons, idolatry sure to follow.

Unlike most adolescents, she does not get to grow in the privacy of her home. Instead, she has to constantly relearn her physical mechanics on tour, playing in front of thousands. "Im the crowd favourite out there, im one of the favourites on the tour and im by far the most popular. all the other players wish they were just like me".

Unfortunately in the previous 2 weeks the former number 1 in the FLT hasn't been playing her best tennis losing both of her 2nd rnd match ups against Alicia and Venus. "My last 2 weeks have been very very dissapointing and I just hope i can do well this week, I really do want the title and I can do it, but its goign to be very hard since ive gotten this virus".

Since last Saturday, Maria Sharapva has been hiding at a private resort due to the high publicity she recieves and as she came out today to practice the press and fans noticed that 'Sexy Sharapova' wasn`t the same as she has previously been. "Im not really happy, ive cought a virus and I really dont feel well, It came on Saturday night and ever since then ive had a sore throat and headaches and my body has been aching pretty bad. The doctor has given me antibiotics and told me that i should withdrawl from this tournament, but i feel that i can still win this tournament and beat Tammy tomorrow".

"Today practice was awful, although i was hitting the ball at around 50% to my potential, I just didn`t feel well at all, my legs and arms are just aching so thats why we only did 20minutes today and Ill just rest up until my match against Tammy and hopefully all will be good then."

Despite the russian beauty being ill with a virus, she still is a major force to be reckoned with on the tour at any stage and she still is a minor favourite to win the tournament despite her downfall in the last 2 weeks.
