Fabrice Santoro of France defeated fourth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-4, 7-6 (3) Wednesday to advance to the second round of the Open 13. The Swede had 10 aces to Santoro's three but converted none of his three break points. Santoro, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open on his 54th attempt, next plays Britain's Greg Rusedski.
