The 1st opponent in Safina's way of becoming the next #1 player is Pironkova. They've only played once before, which was in Stuttgart last fall (Safina won 6-1 7-6(6) ).
I think Pironkova could be a tough one :shrug: Surely a lot of us remember Venus was her unsuspecting upset victim in the 1st round of the AO 2006. Additionally, Pironkova stopped Ivanovic from potentially becoming #1 in Rome last year.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this match go 3 sets, regardless of who wins...
