Mattek-Sands paired up with Zhang and Kenin with Azarenka. Uhm. No Chan sisters?

Everyone is talking about the asterisk but the 2020 doubles draw may be the weakest in years.

24 direct entries, so there is no on-site sign in at this event or no byes?

Entry List in pictorial format
178628

If the alternates teams are going to enter on-site (deadline Friday 21 August 12:00 Noon using the best combined single or doubles ranking), the order would likely be as below.
5 on site teams will be accepted based on the Aug 17 ranking.

1 Williams, Serena / Williams, Venus
2 Cornet, Alizé / Ferro, Fiona
3 Kato, Miyu / Doi, Misaki
4 Siegemund, Laura / Zvonareva, Vera
5 Stojanovic, Nina / Begu, Irina-Camelia
6 Sizikova, Yana / Marozava, Lidziya
7 Pegula, Jessica / Neel, Ingrid
8 Arconada, Usue Maitane / Li, Ann
9 Sharma, Astra / Routliffe, Erin
10 Webley-Smith, Emily / Whoriskey, Caitlin
11 Gleason, Quinn / Harrison, Catherine
12 Silva, Eden / Grey, Sarah Beth
13 Bektas, Emina / Moore, Tara

Teams should not be allowed to use their singles rankings for this particular tournament. It has specifically been put in place at the same venue as a lead-up for the US Open, where players can't use their singles rankings to vulture into the doubles. All it would achieve is ill-feeling amongst the doubles specialists that, once again, they're being treated as second-class citizens, with some being unable to get any lead-up play at all if the singles players take their spots.

So 32 draw this year, no byes.

I don't see any ill-feelings if the ranking goes all the way down to 60s for both players on the advanced entry list for a Premier 5. Players are free to enter and then withdraw, but top doubles players are simply not showing up. With Babos missing, even Mladenovic has to rely on Tomljanovic to get into the list. Look how many doubles players ranked before Tomljanovic there were missing...

On top of that, this event generally has only 28 draws, plus the rule change from last year, so USTA actually added 5 extra spots for doubles team (19 > 24). Had this event followed last year's rule, the cut off is at Hibino/Ninomiya at 126.

Last year's entry list: 2019 Cincinnati Doubles Entry List

Cut off didn't even reach combined rankings of 100.

I wish! Her at the back of the court and Su at the front would have been cute.

I was thinking maybe this is finally Yu-chieh's time to win a slam lol.
I would think Clijsters and her would have a shot at the title, plus I think Kim needs some more practice.

Then she would have signed up with her sister for W&S, that entry list would have had her sister in it as well.

Yeah with a lot of the teams split up, those two have a lot more experience and don't need as much 'team practice'. Sigh. I hope something happens and we'll see both playing more dubs (together or otherwise). Even if it takes until RG.

has Covid sent Srebotnik into quiet retirement? :(
At start of June when Slovenian tennis association organized exhibition Mima Jaušovec Cup Srebotnik was also invited but said she is having arm injury and couldn't play so maybe this is still a case. :) On other hand as much as I love Kata she is obviously long past her peak so maybe retirement wouldn't be worst idea at all. :(

ok thanks :)
sure she could be retiring any time now I guess + no need to risk anything with covid ...
we'll see
we'll miss her a lot though, even with all those early exits :(
