Horrible from Donna. Nothing on her shots. Was pulling up on the forehand constantly. This isn’t her game. Mentally seemed out of the match after the first few games.

As a fan of her, badly needed. Either it forces her to start giving some effort again, or she retires. Both of these outcomes are better than being a living ghost on the court nowadays, painful to watch.

I can’t remember a single previous result of this Zakharova - she’s not memorable at all. Need to look her up now.

 

She's never beaten anyone top 60 and tends to chug around in qualies and 125s most of the time, so she rarely even gets to play people of Donna's level. Making the main draw of this tournament was already a good result for her but winning this match is unreal. Her best result is reaching 3r AO 2024 as a Q (beating Poots then ranked 64, her previous career best win).

 

Girl, aren't you practicing before tournaments anymore? I would recommend two 30 min hits + a test set or match..

Very weird season from Donna. In isolated matches she has looked very good, twice v Navarro and RG R1 for instance but in general her level has been utterly horrendous. Big ranking drop coming soon and I could even see the end being near.

 

Most days, she seems to be completely absent on court. My gut is that Bajin is pushing her too hard off the court. She looked mentally checked out after the first three games today and she was coming off a 10 day break.

Yes, the same delulu ones that thought she was going to stabilize as a consistent top 10 and contend for Slams. She had a boon of fortune for about 3 months and went back to her real level.

She hit hard and flat and consistently got low down on her knees to redirect the low ball hard and flat DTL into corners. Vekic wasn't near most of these balls. Good attitude and 1st serve but her 2nd serve extremely vulnerable to attack.

it was a bad draw for a sluggish Vekic for her first match on grass. I am surprised Zakharova has hardly played a grass tournament let alone won a match on grass as having seen her play before did think she has the game for grass and other quick surfaces. Can see her doing well in those grass ITFs , don't know where she's entered next. One to watch

Fully agree. How about giving some credit to Zakharova? She played out of her skin for the entire match, and fully deserved the win. Her chance of beating Keys in the second round is probably close to zero, but everyone knows what happens if/when Keys zones out and turns into a BBB. To be fair, she hasn't been doing that this year, but I feel that Zakharova will get back a lot more balls than she's expecting.

Zakharova definitely has what it takes to hang around the lower end of the top 100. Not sure if I ever see her climbing higher than ~50 though.

I’ll forever be grateful to her for helping my hopeless Russian doubles fave Angelina Gabueva reach the top 100, despite have a horrifically limited game 🙈

 

Donna has always been inconsistent. She might reach Wimbledon final this year, but she might also lose to Selekhmeteva in the 1st round after a 2.5 hrs war of attrition. She's just one big rollercoaster wrapped up in designer clothing. You either enjoy the ride or get sick pretty soon. Sometimes both!

 

Why are so many people surprised by this result? Vekic hasn't won a match in a 500 in almost 12 months (since Bad Homburg).

 

Are matches at 500 level specific and different to GS and WTA1000 matches?

 

If a player hasn't won a match in smaller tournaments while still having good results in bigger tournament, it probably means that she doesn't care about the smaller tournaments and only uses them as training.
