Clouds thicken over Williams sisters' future

DUBAI (AFP) - Venus and Serena Williams have pulled out of the 1million dollars Dubai Duty Open, further increasing fears that the sisters who dominated the game during the early part of the game will never be the same again.

Venus has withdrawn with a right arm strain which is said to have worsened in training, and Serena declared she had a problem with an ongoing knee injury and did not want to risk it.

"I don't want to compete until my knee feels completely better," said Serena, whose problems are compounded by a related increase in weight which brought jibes from spectators during last month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

This was the only tournament which the former winner of all four Grand Slams has played this year, during which she has so far won only two matches. Serena has not won a tournament since the Australian Open more than 13 months ago.

Venus' predicament seems almost as bad, not having won a match this year, having played one tournament only, and not having won a title since Wimbledon nearly eight months ago.

Venus has slipped to number ten in the world and Serena to 44, which means that she cannot any longer be seeded in good quality events.

However the recently returned former world number one 'Swiss Miss' Martina Hingis doesn't believe that they will retire.

"I can't just see them walking away from the game, no."

But with professional tennis developing all the time and both sisters having time-consuming interests outside the sport, it is becoming harder all the time for them to catch up again.

This may be what Venus has in mind, particularly after appearing to be at a low ebb at Dubai this time last year, and somehow going on to an unexpected triumph in regaining the Wimbledon title.

What do u guys think will they ever return?? I hope not

The Williams' lovers hope so. So do the haters and tha they will be SUNK!

As a neutral admirer, I hope they come back and do themsleves and the game justice.
I, too am a neutral admirer. I don't think they're done with tennis yet. Hopefully both the sisters will be back soon.

It's definitely something to think about. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, I'm always rooting for my favourite player, Serena. Venus is up there too on my list. But, as each passing tournament pull-out comes, and them being beaten week in and week out, I lose hope.

Of course they will return. They must be the most unpredictable players in history. Sometimes they look as though they are done for good and a couple of weeks later they blow everyone off court and win a major. Besides, if they want it they still have five or more years of great tennis to look forward to.

My impression is that they want to be professional celebrities, like Paris Hilton, instead of tennis players now.

So if they do return, it will not be with all the enthusiasm and willingness to dedicate their time and energies to becoming at the top again. Just enough to further their career as professional celebrities, keep their faces in the news.

I wish this was wrong. But it's my opinion based on what I'm seeing now.

Well, it is a good thing your opinion doesn't really count for anything.

If anyone could tell me whats wrong with them (still the knee??? an arm strain from not playing?) it might be possible to guess how it will turn out?

4 weeks I believe... but it is getting a little ridiculous though, how can they always be injured when they rarely play anyway?

I really hope they both come back soon.

Well, they've typically been uninterested in tournaments before the IW/Key Biscayne season. So this is par for the course. If they're pulling this stuff in May, we could talk seriously about the either sister taking an official break from the tennis world a la Hingis. But I doubt (and hope) that this isn't in the cards.

In the past they've been able to just come back after not playing, waltz into a slam and pick up where they left off and win the slam. I'm not so sure now how easy it will be to play that way. And that may be a problem they find now. Because they've had so much success that way they may be tempted to stay like that. I'm thinking more and more to win a slam they're gonna have to put in a lot of hard work and preparation. That would be no bad thing. I think it's bad for the game if a player can just waltz in without doing much beforehand.

I'd also like to see them either really dedicate themselves to the game if they decide to stay. Or do something else if that's what interests them. I'm not very keen on these half and half measures. Also if Serena wants to get fully recovered before playing again set a date or tournament she's aiming to be fully recovered by. Let everyone know if it's going better or worse. Not this drifting along pulling out late from tournament one at a time as they come up.
