Collecting additional prize-money data from 1995/96

The numbers given at WTAtennis.com are different from the numbers given in their PDF-files. The USO winner-number from PDF is the same I found earlier at theguardian.com.

example
1995 US = winner US$ 497,020 from WTAtennis.com matches overview
1995 US = winner US$ 575,000 from WTA-PDF (= theguardian.com)

1995 AO = winner US$ 299,199 WTAtennis.com matches overview
1995 AO = winner US$ 351,120 WTA-PDF

There is no difference for FO and Wimbledon

Reason?

I’m still trying to understand how Martina took over the number one ranking so early in the year of 1978. If I understand your system correctly, there is no drop off of points from earlier in a 52 week ranking period - it’s just simply an accumulation of both points earned as well as quality points for victories over highly ranked players? So, because Martina played so many more tournaments than Chris, she accumulated more points overall? Martina went on such an incredible run in Evert’s absence during the winter of ‘78, just losing two matches, that it makes sense she could take over the top spot. I just thought it would have been later than January 16th. To me, it makes more sense that it would happen when Chris’s Slims finale drops off and Martina’s Slim victory is added in.

But again, what a wonderful and interesting thread.

Also, I am wondering if you have the official rankings from January 1978? I have always wondered where Goolagong debuted when she popped back on to the computer rankings? I’ve always wondered if she might have had the highest debut in WTA computer ranking history but I’ve never been able to locate those rankings. Much appreciated if you have them.
Thank you!
I have some of the rankings from this period. Are you still after the January 1978 ones?

Yes, please! I would love to see them, especially where/when Evonne reappeared. I’ve always wondered if it was the highest, or one of the highest, reappearances ever. I am sure Clijsters is right up there and, if Monica’s ranking weren’t protected she would most likely be the record holder?

Definitely have week of 29/1/78. May have others too - I'll have a look.

Give me a year and will produce my (subjective of course) list for you.

Do you only use the top 60 tournaments? It could work for rankings from say 1983 to now, but for earlier years I find it would be hard indeed.

At any rate I could give you my rankings rubric (and the reasons why) and you can modify it as you see fit.
Thought about an objective work:
 • tools: threads tournament winners by event, world rankings and the yearly results
 • from the world rankings experts/reporters top10-lists I look where each player was competing at
 • for example: the top10 list for 1920 will be relevant for the 1921 tournaments
 • because I know how many top10 would show up at each category nowadays, I can see which tournament was how big back than for each single year
 • thereafter I can see which tournament attracted how many top players year by year
 • with this method I also can see which tournament should be upgraded or downgraded at one point
Objective, isn't it?

This method cannot work for 60 tournaments with only 10 players provided, but surely it works for Tier I or Tier II.

****************************************

further thoughts

Taking all results from those emerged Tier I and II tournaments and converting them into a short ranking. This provides more names objectively than the initial 10 to determine the other Tiers.
Doing so for every year is hard work, but necessary.

I mentioned earlier that the player search at WTAtennis.com is bad, but ...
working with the players matches overview at WTAtennis.com is horrible.

It's like game of pure chance. It depends on which day or even on which time of day you look for match results.
Sometimes you get displayed all results, sometimes nothing (when you know exactly there is something), sometimes you get only partly results, skipped tournmannts or "only" skipped earlier round results.

This is brutal to my nerves!

If you have the feeling you got displayed all results of that player, you have to save that page immediately, because you never know if you get them at another try!

Tell me about it being crap! I just found out that Katerina Skronska has two profiles at wtatennis.com and you need both profiles to find all her matches!
Collecting matches from ITF tournaments. For one I still miss a complete draw-quarter.
Any chance to get match data for Brenda Schultz-McCarthy at WTAtennis.com earlier than 2006?

finished my main rankings about the year 1995 :smoke:

https://www.tennisforum.com/59-blast-past/1302826-my-weekly-rankings-project-post80193006.html

------------------------

my database is grown to 16897 entries + 3534 cross references

*********************

Just now found out that Kristen Radford is not Kristine Radford (Kunce). Have to check all Radford results...
I don't really wanna know how many problems are still hidden between the rows.

Stela Penciu has two entries at WTAtennis.com, one with birthdate Jan 5 1970, the other with birthdate May 1 1970

The work for this thread is nearly completed for now.

No updates for my main rankings. I will add the missing lists about the other systems (1995-97) soon.

**************************

But this is not the end for this project. For the next step I will open a new thread.

*************************

at now my database has 17616 name entries + 3606 cross references = 21222

Thanks for the updates! I enjoyed browsing and reliving old times. I was always perplexed that Hingis overtook Graf in the rankings when Steffi still held 3 slams and the YEC. I totally understood that Hingis was absolutely the number one for 1997 by the AO, but it didn’t make sense to me on a 52 week basis. I didn’t really feel she deserved it until the French points came off Graf’s tally. Obviously with only one match loss Hingis was head and shoulders above everyone by that point, but I still felt Graf’s 52 week ranking was stronger until that tournament.

Your feeling was my feeling. The reason why I expanded my working plan a little bit beyond 1996.

My work shows without quality points Graf would remain no.1 until FO with interruptions.
Hingis was still the underdog in 1996 and often had to play higher ranked players, what gave her this crucial advantage over Graf in spring of 1997.
I think this was crucial for the official rankings, too.

new tournaments = (presumed) all-new tournaments with women including (singles, doubles, mixed)
presumed running = tournaments with women singles events running, even if no result is given, unless explicitely excluded ("not held")

any given results = women singles: at least the winner is known
(the region numbers refer to the any given results column)

int-nat = tournaments with international participation
int-cont = tournaments with intercontinental participation
(both refer to the any given results column)

full draw or mostly = tournament draws given with exact number of players, with full results or results of minimum the last 8 (QF+SF+F)
 • Great Britain dominates the tennis world until 1902
 • in 1903 for the first time are more results given from another region than from Great Britain
 • interesting how late tournament tennis in the rest of Europe has a breakthrough
 • first known international participations in 1893, seventeen years after the first tournaments (Irish players in England do not count here as international)
