Intro:

the official rankings by the WTA for women's pro players were introduced in 1975.
All available statistics can only go back to that date.

The most important statistics are around the number one position, where Steffi Graf got impressive achievements.
But how good does she look in comparison to all the stars competing before 1975?

And further: how good does she look if we apply the same rules for all rankings?
An important question. Because the official system to rank the players saw some big changes and various smaller changes over the decades,
which made the ranking results not comparable one-to-one.

My ambitious aim is to create synchronized rankings for all pro years and then extend them to the amateur years as far back as possible.

principles:

Unlike to Rollo's "easy" years (surely only meaning who is №1), there are no easy years to work on.

With working on this project I realized that this project will never be finished.

Why?

1.
To finish it I would need the complete data of results of all tournaments ever played.
Almost every day are added new or corrected results in this forum, which will change the rankings more or less when I add them to my database.

2.
And also the data given for names is often incomplete or inconclusive.
Almost every week I recognize new coherencies (married names for example).
Results formerly seperated should be added together and some results should be seperated later, wich also changes the rankings more or less.

3.
There are also many standalone results I cannot associate with a specific person, because of no first name given or many persons exist with the same initials.
Can I associate them clearly one day in the future, this also changes the rankings more or less.
(examples: A. Rigby = Anthea or Agnes or Alison? / L. Raymond = Lorna or Lois? / G. Stirton = Gwen or Greta?)

I can not recalculate all years after making a change in the database and post the new lists here immediately.
So every list posted here is a snap-shot of the data I had at that day of calculating.

This thread's goal is 75 years with almost 3900 weeks of rankings!

the project progress:

step1: 1968 to 1975 ..................... finished, ca. 2017-06
step2: 1964 to 1968 ..................... finished, ca. 2017-11
step3: 1976 to 1980 ..................... finished, ca. 2018-01
step4: 1959 to 1964 ..................... finished, ca. 2018-05
step5: 1965 to 1980 (updating) ..... finished, 2018-10
step6: 1981 to 1996 ..................... finished, 2019-09
(opening new thread)
step7: 1920 to 1958 ..................... started
step8: 1959 to 1996 (updating)
step9: 1997 to 2018

It is impossible to post every weekly ranking here. So I will limit myself to excerpts of the most important seeming weeks, including the "Big Three".

  • The displayed points in my ranking-files are usually rounded to full points.
If the difference of the main points-sum between positions is less than 1 point, than needed tenths, hundredths or thousandth will be displayed automatically.
    (In the added/off columns: "0," = value between 0.001 and 0.500).
  • My short personal comments about the rankings between the pictures are primarily focused on up-movements of young/new players or special achievements of established players.

my rules:

Everyone has own ideas and suggestions about the best system - many discussions about that case inside Forums.

Mine is mostly based on the WTA rules of 2005 as you can see in my rulebook.
Surely I had some points of criticism about details and adjust it, but in general I always thought that was a good system to show the performance of the players.

  • ranking of round points and quality points combined (similar to WTA from mid-'80s till 2005)
  • match ranking instead of round-reach ranking (= no points for byes or walkovers)
  • all results from a 52-week-period are converted into points and simply added together
  • I'm firmly convinced that further rules (best 16 results , average per tournament) will cause inappropriate disadvantage/privilege of certain circumstances

The current used tournament categories and points allocations are not fixed forever, they are still in the refining process. *

>>> for each category

______________

about the additional rankings beside my main rankings:
  • all these use the existing round points values from my main rankings, but not those quality values --> because the ranking positions often differ, the quality points cannot be the same (too complicated for now)
  • "Diminishing": results of the latest 3 month count 100%, than declining percentages down to 50% for the oldest month (--> the off-points in published ranking files are displayed as 100%)
  • average-per-tourn't: adapts the minimum divisor of 12 tournaments
  • the 5-lists-mix: only the positions of the other lists converted, not the points (value 1.00 means №1 everywhere)

______________

* the future:

I already know that I have to make some changes:
(because of the growing differencies in ITF categories in the 1990s - which also is more appropriate for hundreds of smaller pre-Open-Era tournaments)
In that alteration process I will also (try to) allocate fix categories for all years before the 1980s as measured by my newest insights.
- that means for many tournaments of the amateur era I will have a more different rankings impact than now
- on the other hand: some/many of the early Virginia Slims tournaments, all seeming "Tier I", will be downgraded painfully

planned as well:
  • will raise the normal amount of quality points (targeting an average 40%-ratio for the top100, up from < 30%-ratio at now)
  • thinking about to implement bonus points for defeating much-higher-ranked players
  • will modify my tournament-Grade-assign program
  • I'm still undecided how to count the Challenge Round in my points-per-round-breakdown

Wow, this sounds amazing. Thank you!
So Goolagong never attained the number one ranking in your stats? Not in 1971 or ‘76?

That's right.
After her Wimbledon victory in 1971 she had by far the biggest single points result on her count until the next Wimbledon, but other tournaments were not strong enough to get ahead of others (the grade of each tournament is deciding).

---------------------------------------------------

Excerpts of the weeks where Goolagong officially recognized as being no1. (renewed because the old picture disappeared)
Here she earns the second-highest single result of all players but the distance to Evert stays too big.

Thanks Peter. This is so interesting! So, I am wondering how did Martina get to number one so fast in Jan 1978? Chris would have only lost points from a few Slims tournies, but still held the Slims finale, USO, Colgate and Hilton Head. Did you halve the points after 26 weeks?
And also curious as to Martina being ranked number one from start to finish in 1980? When that season ended she had no slams or even slam final results, just final of the Avon. Did the Jan 1980 Colgate factor heavily into this?
Thanks again. Really great stuff.

At first: she was not really a fast no.1 - she reached the no.2 very fast -and then it needed 3 years to reach the no.1 finally.

Below you can look at the takeover in 1978:
I think the answer for you questions you will find in post #4:

You can see if you take an average of the points, she wouldn't be no.1. The official rankings are averaged as far as I know.

Here with 20 to 13 tournaments --> Navratilova worked harder than Evert - she deserved it.
You can also see that Cuypers is ranked only at 24 with 32 results, so playing more doesn't mean automatically high rankings.

the Colgate Ch's is her second best, Chicago is her best result.

I’m still trying to understand how Martina took over the number one ranking so early in the year of 1978. If I understand your system correctly, there is no drop off of points from earlier in a 52 week ranking period - it’s just simply an accumulation of both points earned as well as quality points for victories over highly ranked players? So, because Martina played so many more tournaments than Chris, she accumulated more points overall? Martina went on such an incredible run in Evert’s absence during the winter of ‘78, just losing two matches, that it makes sense she could take over the top spot. I just thought it would have been later than January 16th. To me, it makes more sense that it would happen when Chris’s Slims finale drops off and Martina’s Slim victory is added in.

But again, what a wonderful and interesting thread.

Also, I am wondering if you have the official rankings from January 1978? I have always wondered where Goolagong debuted when she popped back on to the computer rankings? I’ve always wondered if she might have had the highest debut in WTA computer ranking history but I’ve never been able to locate those rankings. Much appreciated if you have them.
Thank you!

I can't help you, sorry.

with a minimun tournaments rule this is possible. Today if I win 3 Grand Slams and play nothing else I would debut inside the top10.;)

I think I should build this thread like "Rollo' Rankings": posts on stock for every single year. This will contain the years from 1945 onwards.
If I'm finished and still have energy I will open a second thread with the time untill 1945.

It was very interesting to read in this Forum that there were also tournaments during both world wars.
I have no imagination how I should handle those years with mostly small local tournaments without good competitions.
Also 1945 (rest), 1946, 1947 tournaments can't have the best competions I think. Travelling around surely was still not that easy within/from/to the destroyed continent(s).

For now I will start at the end of the 1950s, when the world has mostly recovered in many ways and travelling around got easier.
