The West Australian -- MARCELO RIOS is still drawing criticism for his comment that women's tennis lacks depth.

World No. 1 Jennifer Capriati told reporters today the comment was absurd.

"It doesn't hurt me because it is obviously not true, and what can you say?" Capriati said. "What can you answer back to that? Stupidity really deserves no answer."

Capriati joined several leading women players who differed with the Chilean former world No. 1 after he said earlier this week that the early rounds of a women's tournament were "a joke" because the top players won so easily.

In contrast, he said, little known challengers can topple the top men at any time.

Today, Rios defended his comments.

"I'm not going to start arguing about what anybody thinks," he said after beating Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter finals.

"I just said what I thought about it and in the locker-room everybody was agreeing," he said. "It is ridiculous what is going on in women's tennis and I think everybody agrees."
