Wimbledon rules out changing start in 2005

September 11, 2003
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Wimbledon officials ruled out delaying the tournament's start by a week in 2005 to give players more time to adjust to grass after the clay-court French Open.

The All England Club said Thursday it will keep the traditional dates for 2004 and 2005, meaning Wimbledon still will begin two weeks after the French Open ends.

The club said it made the announcement because there was speculation the dates would be changed in 2005. For years, players have lobbied for an extra week to adjust from clay to grass.

``We are acutely aware that huge numbers of visitors to Wimbledon and many organizations connected to the event make their plans well in advance,'' All England Club chief executive Christopher Gorringe said. ``Confirmation of the dates for 2005 should help us all.''

The 2004 tournament will be June 21 to July 4; the 2005 tournament will be June 20 to July 3.

The All England Club will continue discussions about adding a third week between the Grand Slam tournaments in 2006 or beyond.
