Pironkova proving her GrassGOAT credentials with an excellent first 3 games, Maria responding with (imo) her best grasscourt tennis since 2006 to save 5 setpoints and edge a tiebreak, before getting an early break in the 2nd She was moving excellently, striking the ball well (having cleaned up the sloppy errors she was making in the first half of the 1st set), and some clutch serving.

Wouldn't be surprised if Pironkova takes the second set if she comes out as inspired as she does today, but it's hard not to see Maria closing it out in 3 in that case :shrug:

Gotta feel for Pironkova. She was godly early on and played really well throughout, but somehow Maria managed to claw her back. Really good match so far.

She couldn't see the ball properly. She wanted to stop as soon as the first set was over. I'm glad they made her wait it out to be honest. I'm deathly terrified that Pironkova will come out all Godly and fearless like she did today!

Not sure if a suspended unfinished match deserves a thread, but That was worrying I stopped watching after Maria saved 3 sps in a row with those serves

Loved seeing Maria hit a smash early on too and glad Maria managed closed out the first set somehow

Did Pironkova's level of play drop in the second, Maria improve or is it still close with Maria just getting the early break?

I'm actually impressed so far. Yeah there were sloppy errors to begin with but Pironkova was in grassGOAT for too. Thought her movement and footwork were superb, especially considering the whole day was damp and dew would have been starting to set. Serve was good too, especially in the clutch.

Finish it quickly tomorrow please.

great match so far, Pironkova went out fearless and playing very well. I'm very impressed by the way Maria saved those SET points, once again she proved why she's one of the best players out there.

Can't wait for tomorrow!! I would like Maria to win it in 2 but I think Pironkova will still fight back.

First set was great, I felt Pironkova was a little unlucky not to take it. I am not sure she believes that she can win this match.

Would love to see a three set match.

True.

But you forgot to tell that BOTH made at least 3 horrible, unbelievable (!) mistakes.
Most of them just 100% easy shots at the net and with the opponent 5 metres out of court.

Beside those 3 horrible errors from both (which are not ok for a No. 1) it was a good, tight set.
