Mihaela played one of her best matches so far in her very modest year, but she came short again. She was very aggressive today-this match should help her get some confidence.
Simona has done just enough in the 3rd in order to win. Not a convincing performance. Can’t her team put up a game plan without Cahill?

Buzarnescu was robbed Hantuchova-style in that last game. The call affected her shot, and her return was actually in the court and yet Halep got given the point after the challenge <img src="https://www.tennisforum.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Laugh Out Loud" class="inlineimg" />

Dr. Buzz was robbed in the last game. Simona didn't do much except for returning shot after shot which I guess was a good strategy against Mihaela in the end. Exciting stuff, really. :p

In all seriousness, Mihaela looked much better than all season. Hopefully this is a stepping stone for her.

Aurelie Tourte continues to be one of the WORST umpires… She still gets heaps of important matches too. I’m quite sure Screamona was going to win that one anyway, but still a bit of a dampening way to end it.

Really encouraging signs for Dr Buzz. God she was hitting that CC backhand well at times today, some solid netplay (until she crumbled at the end) and the forehand DTL was money. Grass could actually be a very good surface for her in future, shame the season is so short.

Halep must be wondering where that level from her was during all the Fed Cup ties.

This umpire should be demoted to ITF where she can boss around. Leave the big matches to those who can judge.

Too bad the better player lost. If only Buzarnescu wasn't rusty. Simon just screamed and grinded her way out of that match. Next up is Victoria. Destroy this pusher Azarenka.

she should have called the supervisor like Aga did at AO one time. It's poor. I do wish Halep spoke up about it.

Buzarnescu was nice. I wish she had some choice words for the umpire on her way out (without covering her mouth that is).

Dr Buzz is my favorite Romanian player so I would have been OK with the upset.
I didn't expect her to beat Halep today but she made it competitive, even taking a set.

It's been a difficult return from injury so she can be encouraged by her performance.
In the end the Lord was blown another sensuous kiss and we have an interesting Vika/Simona clash upcoming.

Another unseeded opponent outplaying Halep, but handing her the match on a silver platter with UEs. I can't see Vika doing that. I can't see Simona holding serve once on Friday. She'd struggle to hold serve against her 3-year old niece.

Can't wait to hear how making the third round was a good result for Simona, and how she won't make a big drama out of losing because this is her chill year. I can't think of any other pro athlete in my lifetime with such an unapologetically amateur attitude. She actually said, "Maybe I'll push myself more next year." Is she on sabbatical?? Pathetic.
If you're so relaxed now, Simona, why do you continue to be so gutless on court? Why are you so afraid to ever step inside the court and take balls out of the air? Has she attempted one volley yet this week? Just goes to show how Cahill and her support team have done nothing but enable her childish mentality. She's just as nervous in matches as she ever was; rushing through her service games to get broken to love; glaring at her box and pouting as she falls apart in the second set in almost every match; treating inside the baseline like it's lava.

I hope Vika doesn't get too cocky after destroying this mug. She's got a great opportunity to make at least the SF here.

It is difficult for the erratic Doc Buz to beat the very good and very consistent Halep. Doc Buz would have to have a super day to beat Halep.
Doc Buz keeps playing in big events, and drawing big stars, but she should play in the small tournaments to get more court time.
She should try and get a wild card into Bastad next week, as she would be 2nd seed.

She's an ATP-umpire anyway so we only have to bear with her when there's a Slam.

I don't even want to bear her. Why did she become an umpire if she wanted to be a sheriff?

If Simona doesnt improve drastically, shes going out to Vika. Shes been losing sets to anyone lately.
Some positive signs from the doc though.

Re-watched that last game, and she was 100% robbed. Her shot not only was hit as the call was made, but landed in the court! I don't know how the rest of the match would have gone, but it is an awful call.

Were the game plans any better with Cahill? This is the result of his great coaching: The most one-dimensional, weaponless game on tour. She played exactly the same way at Wimbledon last year. All she added to her game under Cahill was increasingly obnoxious grunting as she spins balls down the middle with zero pace. She started working with him unofficially after Wimbledon in 2015, and in that time she went 7-9 in finals and lost in the 1st round of a Slam 4 times. She somehow reached #1 in 2017 with just one title. Heck, if she can get to the 2nd round in NY, this will be the first time since 2014 she managed to avoid a 1st round loss at a Slam. She's defended her points, and losing to Vika this year won't be as bad as blowing a 5-2 third set lead to Hsieh last year.

I was expecting Buzz to play well, she was motivated to acquit herself well in this one. And the matchup is quite favorable to her, she plays her best when opponents don't hit with a lot of pace and can't take time away from her wonky BH.

Some vintage SlamR1mona today  Thinking the match is over when leading by a set and 2-0. Losing more than half of the points that she would start in complete control of because she didn't know how to end them. Hitting UEs off of anything landing midcourt. Struggling to hold serve. Drastic improvements are needed to have a chance at a good run here.
