Hasn't Heather Watson had enough opportunities? Swiatek is the only one of that lot I can accept if we must have them given she has worked her way near the top 50 since the cut off. Don't mind a couple of wc's being held back for players in that sort of category.

Lisicki really? I wish Wimbledon would stop rewarding has beens like her and Baghdatis. It's fine if they are showing some form or a promise of a return but Lisicki is really just done! She's played a full schedule and can't get herself a top 200 ranking she's won ONE match in 2019! At least the British scrubs have beaten other scrubs. She's lost to Shinikova, Raina, Galfi and Wallace, it's just a mockery.

EDIT: It's also her 8th WC of the year. Like why is she so popular? Are people really buying tickets to see someone who never even cracked the top 10!

Pls don't come at me Lisicki fans.

Heather would have / will get in on ranking anyway as there are no real other WC alternatives to push her out.

Oh please, did you see the list of scrubs that got WCs for RG? Wimbledon usually at least applies a cutoff, and why shouldn't it reward Watson, Swan and Dart, all of whom are capable of winning a match here against the right opponent.

what have any of the Brits done to deserve a wildcard ? they waste these wildcards on absolute no hopers every single year, as do so many tournies. But Slams is more of a issue because the rewards are so much greater in terms of prizes/points.

Watson is just a journeywoman player these days, if your highest career rank is 37 at the age of 27, you shouldn't be parachuted into such a big competition given you're not the future, stand little hope of making round 3 let alone winning and done nothing in your career to demonstrate why you should be there, apart from being British. You should have to earn your place but of course the LTA needs British players to progress somehow to make them look good. Winning a junior event here 12 months ago shouldn't give license to promote Swiatek into Wimbledon either.

Lisicki would have been more worthy of a main draw wildcard than any on the list, former top 12 player and Wimbledon finalist.

We need to end this freebie culture anyway.

What do you mean? There's literally only going to end up being 2 MDWCs for the home nation. If you are looking at it from a neutral perspective then it realistically couldn't have gone better from that POV. Imagine any other slam giving 2 MDWCs out and 6 next in.

What were you expecting to make it 'better'?

This is only her 4th WC (and it isn't really a wildcard as she would be a DA if they didn't have any wildcards) plus two of them came when she was teenager 2010 and 2011. Her only other one was in 2017 when she reached 3rd round beating Sevastova, having suffered with mono through most of 2016 hence ranking slide.

WHAT!?! You're deluded. She's won one match all year against Ellen Perez. How is that more deserving than Harriet Dart who qualified for AO or Katie Swan who just beat a top 100 player. Swiatek is firmly in top 100 at aged 18! Plus her and Watson are literally the next two in anyway. So even if you abandoned freebie culture they would still be in main draw!

How is one good run at Wimbledon 6 years ago worth a lifetime of wildcards?

Joeh - quite funny that post - made me laugh especially the bit about the British scrubs beating other scrubs. I agree with your comments though. I know Lisicki reached the final - which is more than our scrubs have done - but that must be at least six years or more ago and at least it is only a qwc but even so. Easy Solution - in an ideal world - scrap mdwc's at GS events unless it is really justified such as in Swiatek's case. Unfortunately, it won't happen though.

I know you are very vocal about wildcards, but this really couldn't have gone much better from your perspective - you often say why should people jump the queue over those who have worked hard etc. well Watson is literally that person being 3 out, so if you scrap wildcards for slams, she gets in by ranking - you can have no complaints with that.

It looks like the final 'WCs', if Ilkley is won by Linette, Rybarikova or Jorovic, will be:
Jorovic (next in), Kumkhum (next in), Watson (next in), Swiatek (next in) Jakupovic (next in), Zhu (next in), Dart (MDWC), Swan (MDWC)

or if Ilkley is won by someone else other than those 3:
Jorovic (next in), Kumkhum (next in), Watson (next in), Swiatek (next in) Jakupovic (next in), Ilkley winner (MDWC), Dart (MDWC), Swan (MDWC)

That realistically can't be too bad for someone predominantly so against wildcards.

Right - are you referring to cut off six weeks ago re Watson? I counted six (inc this one) since 2010 or is there something I've missed?

So what if Watson, Swan and Dart are capable of winning a match against the right opponent - that could apply to lots of players who will have to hack it through qualifying if you are looking at it from a neutral perspective. And yes I did see the list of scrubs that got wc's for RG but even with the applied cut off Wimbledon has had one of the worst records for home players going out in the first round that have been awarded wild cards in recent years.

Lots of players who aren't British. Tough. It's a fringe benefit of hosting a slam that you can reward your own. The home attendance likes to see and cheer its own players and (rightly or wrongly) doesn't really give a monkeys about the world #110 from somewhere half way round the world. They have the chance to qualify (and pick up useful points in doing so).

Usual suspects, but not bad picks tbh.

And about Lisicki - y'all acting as if she got MDWC. Yeah, she hasn't won a match in a while and she's only getting it as a former finalist, but she's got a long way to go before actually playing Wimbledon - as in, she'll need to win some matches to do that, so...

Yes you miss counted.

2010 WC ranked 249 as an 18 Y/O having won junior US open year before - Easily justified
2011 WC ranked 117 was 3 out of MD anyway - Easily justified as she was only 19 and still a prospect
2012 DA ranked 111 (one of the last in)
2013 DA ranked 47
2014 DA ranked 108 (last in)
2015 DA ranked 43
2016 DA ranked 54
2017 WC ranked 118 had Mono year before and was number 7 ALT by the close of entries
2018 DA, ranked 86, she was number 111 when the tournament started but her R3 points came off early.
2019 WC ranked 105 4th ALT would be in if we abolished wildcards.

So yes you've miscounted there were times she didn't make the initial cut but made it as an ALT so that might be your confusion.

I think she's shown consistency as a top 120 player for the last 8 years. Now please never make me do that much archive digging again.
