Ananova - Serena Williams started her 2002 campaign with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 second round win over Anna Kournikova at the adidas International in Sydney.

Williams, who was given a bye in the first round, said her mind wasn't on the match and her serve was misfiring.

"I put pressure on myself," she said. "I am practicing well - in practice I'm a totally different person - I think my mind and my feet and my head was not into it."

But Williams said she was feeling positive about a title chase at the Australian Open.

Kournikova, who is making a return to action after an eight month injury layoff, said conditions were more important than the result.

"Just in general it was great to see where my game is. I'm just going to take positives out of this match," said the Russian.
