MUNICH, Germany, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Lindsay Davenport has criticised WTA tour officials for carrying out an investigation to determine whether Venus Williams is really injured.

"I think it's stupid," the world number two said on Wednesday. "If she doesn't want to play, she doesn't have to."

Williams has irritated the bosses of the women's tour by pulling out of this week's WTA Championships last Friday, saying she had a sore wrist.

The Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion, who had repeatedly given assurances she would come to Munich for the year-end event for the world's top 16 players, could lose $140,000 in bonus money because of her late withdrawal.

Outgoing WTA tour chief executive officer Bart McGuire said here on Tuesday that a panel of two doctors and a lawyer had been set up to establish whether Williams really missed the tournament because of injury.

Davenport, who moved past South Africa's Amanda Coetzer in her first match in Munich on Wednesday, repeated earlier remarks by saying she felt Williams should have withdrawn earlier.

"I think it would have been better if she had pulled out of everything a month or three weeks ago," she said.

"On the other hand, I think she has every right not to play. We're an individual sport, not a team sport, and we're self-employed. I don't feel like you can make the players play.

"All I said is I think she should have been more up front about it in the beginning."

Lindsay is trying to back-track. She accused Venus' withdrawal of being bad for the WTA. She now realizes that the WTA investigation is bad for players, including her.

Well said against, Lindsay.<br />"If she doesn't want to play, she doesn't have to."

Tthat's it. She is not injured. She doesn't want to play. Nailed it.

Why do you confuse your opinion with fact so often.<br />I think it's 3rd grade (at least in the states) when one is taught the difference.

Being the sweet heart that I am, I'll help you...

opinion 1. a belief or judgement based on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. 2. a personal view, attitude or appraisal.

fact 1. something that actually exists. 2. something known to exist or to have happened 3. a truth known by actual experience or observation.

No really, don't thank me...more than happy to be of service <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[Angel]" />

Yes ys

I read very well. Your comment was, and I<br />quote "Tthat's it. She is not injured. She doesn't want to play. Nailed it."

Now of course boo I could be wrong but unless you know Ms. Venus Williams and have in fact witnessed her playing with the alledgedly injured wrist, you've worded your comment as a statement of fact. Since however we know u have no basis or actual knowledge of which you speak it should have been phrased as an opinion.

Again just trying to be helpful <img src="graemlins/kiss.gif" border="0" alt="[Kiss]" />
