I was thinking and it seems most years in Roland Garros, there is a surprise semifinalist, who unexpectedly makes the semi finals.

2002 - Clarisa Fernandez
2003 - Nadia Petrova
2004 - Paola Suarez
2005 - Elena Likhovtseva

2006- Nicole Vaidisova?
I didn't expect her to reach the semis at least. Anyway, who do you think will be the surprise semifinalist this year? Or alternatively, do you think we wo'n't have one?

Sorry I'm bored. :tape:

Yeah, if there is a section of the draw with Sharapova and Petrova, for instance, that would be ripe for a surprise to get through. Ask me again once we've seen the draw...

Maybe Vika Azarenka  although its a long shot since she's been injured but who knows, she was promising in Estoril and Prague

Definitely, Roland Garros always chucks up some surprises. I hope we get another year like 2004 where it's completely wide open for a first-time Slam champ to come through

If Vee were to get to the final, compared to previous suprise finalists such a Fernandez, Likhovsteva, its nowhere near the same type of suprise semi finalist. I mean we all don't expect Venus to get to the semi's of RG but she's been there before and she has experience, it would be that much of a suprise if she were to get there again. Anyone with 5 slams couldn't be considered a real suprise semi finalist

I hope we do, this is why Roland Garros is my favourite slam, we have lots of surprises.
I will go for a long shot and say Anabel Medina :( I will probably be wrong though but should be interesting :)

Maria owns Nadia in majors (well, and everywhere else too). I would be more surprised if she got past Kuzy ( or JJ depending on who the 4th and 5th seeds at RG will be) or Serena.

Surprise semifinalists seem to be either clay court specialists or future top 10'ers.

As far as clay court specialists, there just aren't that many around anymore. OK, you can laugh me off the board with this one and it'd be fair, but the only one I can think of is Ana Medina Garrigues. I don't think she's really good enough to get to the semis, but with a luck draw it's not completely impossible.

Up & comers could be someone like Golovin if she plays, Peer, Safarova, Alona Bondarenko..

I mean that Maria and Nadia could both lose to lower ranked players, what with their injury problems. That would open the door for someone other than the two of them.
