Anna missed most of the season, and her ranking will plummet as a result. And with virtually all of her points in the early weeks of the season, she figures to slip a bit further before she can start back up, as she has to defend points as an unseeded player.

What this means is that Anna will not be ranked high enough to get into the main draw of the top tournaments. Not without a wildcard. But here's the sitch:

Each player is elgible for 3 main & 3 qualifying draw wild cards. For players on the exempt list, it doubles to 6 & 6. If a player is a 10-year veteran (which Anna is not), she's elgible for 3 more, for a total of 9. And of course, Grand Slam champs get unlimited wild cards. (Again n/a to Anna.)

So we come to early 2002, Anna is barely in the top 100, and has 6 main & 6 qualifying wild cards. Anna plays a lot of tournaments. She could burn through those 6 main draw wild cards in short order. While Anna is capable of pulling some upsets and posting good results to get back up enough before they run out, what if she doesn't? Suppose she gets a series of crappy draws and exits early. And we get to the point where her wild cards are exhausted and she still isn't ranked high enough to get into main draws.

What then? Do tournaments send her through qualfying, and risk her being upset before the paying customers arrive? Or will there be an "amendment" to the wild card rule, allowing her more wild cards? And how will it go over?

Mary Pierce will be having the same problem as Kournikova. Let's see how the WTA handles this problem.

But Mary is a grand slam winner (which gives her more WC) and has an injury protected ranking of No.17 I think.
hmm, but Pierce is a Grand Slam Champion, so she has unlimited access to Wild Card Entries ? Not ?

Anyway - I don't see Kournikova playing Quali's - they're going to implement a change in rules or whatever, but I am pretty sure no tourney official wants to miss her, just because he is not allowed to offer her another wild card.

If Golden Exmpt level won't be enough for her, they will introduce the Diamond Exempt level to qualify for which one has to be named Anna Kournikova.

But seriously, on my calculations, she'll run out of Wild Cards by Green Clay time. It will also depend whether she'll need ones for big draw Indian Wells and Ericsson. If she somehow squeezes into those top 70-80 who granted D/A for those tournaments, which is very tall order, it would make life much easier for her. She might already have those necessary rankigs by then, but 6 weeks D/A cutoff would play against her.

Top 50 players can have 5 WC as well as 3 WC into qualifying fields.

I think Anna will be ok for the time being , should have gained sufficient points by time of end of March hopefully.

Sex sells and Anna is a seller. So they will bend/ break and make new rules to show that ass period.

I know I sound a bit harsh but what I am saying is the truth ..It's all about the money. And sex makes money. If they do bend/change the rules for her it will be a crushig blow to tennis. Anna is no differnt than anyone else. The move will only mock tennis. Tennis is a sport about the love of the game.. not who is packing the place. There are many players who are loved on the tour. Sure Anna makes people money.. but it is MORE money that is the key. Wta/Itf makes money.. they are just greedy .. period!

Believe me, Anna is the biggest draw in tennis besides the Williams, and no promoter will pass up the chance to have the Miss K to be in their tourney...believe me she will get more than enough chances in main draws.....She could even get confident enough if the qualies are weak to play thru them and not use a WC.....

do they have these wildcard rules to be fair to players who clearly arent anna and mary, but rather oh say...anyone in the top 75 or 100 or so who probably can actually make practical use of them as well? is this the reason they have them?

anyways, if they did bend the rules, if it got that bad, what would really happen. im sure some players would try to protest or something but many would likely support changing the rules(for everyone, not just taking exception to anna) because they too would like to have the cussion if they were as misfortunate and unlucky as anna as been? no?
