Weeks at Number One
Steffi Graf 377 weeks
Martina Navratilova 331 weeks
Chris Evert 262 weeks
Martina Hingis 209 weeks
Monica Seles 178 weeks
Serena Williams 57 weeks
Lindsay Davenport 38 weeks
Tracy Austin 22 weeks
Jennifer Capriati 17 weeks
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 12 weeks
Venus Williams 11 weeks
Kim Clijsters 4 weeks

I am not sure how long she is "safe" at number one. She has quarterfinalist points at the Open to defend. She can be overtaken by Henin-Hardenne can't she? This list projects her ranking until the end of the Open. I didn't realize that V. Williams held the ranking for such at short amount of time. Of course, all the active players on this list can add to their totals, and Venus seems most likely to do so of all.

I don't think the US Open is in her top 17 ? or Is it ?

I can easily see he get past Jennifer on that list and maybe more

Actually, I think you are right. Now that I think about it, didn't Kim go out in the fourth round last year? I was just surprised to see that she has the potential to move ahead of so many players in one block of time.

Kim has fourth round points to defend at this year's USO (she lost to Mauresmo).

Depending on how she does at the USO and how Serena (when she comes back) and Justine do in the fall determines if she will be able to hold on to the number one spot.

If Kim fails to reach the SF of the US Open en Justine wins the US Open, Justine will jump to Number 1.
And then Kim already has 17 best tournaments from this year, so to climb up she has to do bether than her last 17th tournament, while Justine is only at her 15th of the year and doesn't have so many points to defend at the end of the year!
So I'll think Kim has to play great if she wants to keep it till the end!

QF is enough for Kim to hold #1........and when Justine wins the US Open

Justine can't get enough quality points without Kim and Serena.

If Justine fails to reach the final and Kim wins the US Open........Justine can say goodbye for # 1 for another year.
Justine also played more then 17 tournaments in the last 52 weeks.

Kim can pass Venus on the no.1 weeks list.....Venus will probably still have 4 or 5 more slams than she does! How hollow would that be?! Being like sixth on that list without A SINGLE GRAND SLAM!! That´s what they call: MILKING the system!

How you think anyone with a good mind will think about Kim's #1 ranking?
Beside Serena being injured and Venus too not playing tournaments due to sickness which gives the Belgians the chance to talk even about #1 and #2 rankings, I prefer Henin to Kim for this position. Kim doesn't deserve it.
She got it because she played too many tournaments and the craterium
to be world number #1 has not been met by Kim---that is winning a
grandslam.

I doesn't seem that hard for her to hold it longer than venus and ASV.. and maybe even Jenny. after that, you are looking at a steeper climb... Kim's had a helluva year this year.. the only downside to that is that she has tons of points to defend next year... and of course, by this time next year, Serena will have ZERO points to defend during the hard court season and the USOpen..

It will be hella tough for Kim to duplicate the year she had this year, and she hasnt had a "great year" when you put it in open era perspective.

A better question might be where will she be ranked come Wimbledon next year.

Anske, I´m not anti-Kim....but you yourself don´t think it would like very odd that the player sixth on the all-time lisr for weeks no.1 probably HASN´T WON A SINGLE GRAND SLAM?! Whereas the others all have AT LEAST three?!

Exactly...No " great" here! Only " milked"......she has semi´s at all her tournaments...the only way to gain will be finals and winning. To do that she will have to start to ACTUALLY beating people.
