Some facts about Serena Williams which prove she is destined for number 1:

1. The only people she lost to this year were: Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Venus Williams

1a. The last time she played Jennifer, Monica and Hingis, she beat all three (I believe in 2 sets)

2. Please check on Monica, but I believe that Serena did not lose to anyone ranked below her this year. (Does any other top 10 player have that distinction).

3. Serena made it to AT LEAST the Quarter Finals of every tournament she entered this year.

4. In Serena's trouncing of Martina Hingis (#1) in the USOopen, she never had to hit a second serve in the second set!

5 Serena has never lost a *match* at the venue in Germany she played in today.

6. Today's win gives Serena 12 WTA wins. That brings her even with Jennifer Capriati in WTA wins.

Serena is as talented as anyone to ever play tennis. It has always been a matter of if she could harness it. We now see evidence that she is maturing. Which means absolute woe to the rest of the WTA. Really, the only player now who can actually defeat Serena consistently is Venus.

-- maybe if she competed more, she would lose more...if she competed in clay, other players would've beaten her...

-- ummm, lindsay would've beaten her

Which Lindsay would have beaten her? The one who has'nt beaten her all year and has Serena (and Venus) permanently lodged in her head?

Check out this Interesting career matchups.. Rena practically owns Lindsay, so there was no telling if Lindsay would have won(unless you had a chat with Miss Cleo LOL) Lindsay trounces the rest of the compettition, but when it comes to Serena and now Venus , she is a different player... I think she thinks of them too much

I don't think Richard or Venus would like Serena to be number before she does.

Serena is not my favourite, but she is such a strong and talented tennis player!! Every time when I watched her play, my mind always running with the word "WOW"... "How can she make those shots???" She just like to bully her opponents on the court, it's difficult to count how many players have been defeated by Serena in a 6-0 set?? (Should be many!!)

With playing only 10 tournaments in 2001, she ended up the ranking at #6....how impressive!! I can't see why she cannot climb into Top 3 in 2002!! Her only real threat is her sister, Venus!! And of coz', it all depends on how many tournaments she will be playing in 2002, and how healthy she will be when she plays!!??

I agree with you

Serena is a much better than her ranking And why Rated you think Serena should play on clay ? She does and did pretty well. Made it to the Quarterfinals in Roland Garros. Also alot of clay courters dont play on hard so what?

I agree with the assesment about Serena steamrolling her opponents. She is handing out alot of bagels with tesutd being her latest victim.

p.s. Serena doesn't have to beat Venus to be #1. Jennifer didn't? So what makes Serena any different?

Serena is on a mission as well as Venus!!!

Serena is a handful of players who have the POTENTIAL to be #1. Like it or not clay is a big handicap for her. Unlike her sister, she has never even won a clay court event. This doesn't make it impossible to get to the top though, as 3 of 4 slams are not on clay.

rated_next (oh so cleverly) replies:

Well, excuse me, rated_next, but the last time I looked, Roland Garros (where Serena made the Quarters) WAS played on clay.

(There's no one blinder, than he who WON'T see.)

BigTennisFan: maybe you should look at serena's draw -- sarah pitkowski, katarina srebotnik, zsofia gubacsi, nadia petrova

ummm, i think she got a pretty easy draw... and pitkowski took her to three sets

So then why is she ranked higher than Testud? She in fact bageled her about two days ago?

Serena needs only ply around 15 tourneys to get higher up in rank. She has already won slam and has too much talent to never win another. It is very possible indeed to be ranked #1 without winning a clay court event. If one can do it without a Slam then one could do it without a clay court event. She made it to the quarterfinals in RG. I actually wouldn't be surprised if wins RG. She is THAT good folks!

This thread should be entitled 'some facts about Serena which make for a very strong case for her, someday, being #1'. Nothing's proven yet. Serena herself said that she could be in a car accident (god forbid). I think she'll get to #1 soon. Maybe not next year, but soon after that. She'll need to win another Slam first. Or play lots more tournaments and be like Martina Hingis and get to #1 without a Slam!

I believe Serena wants to get to #1 but not as bad as she wants to win slams. Both she and Venus will be ready at the Aussie. As far as Roland Garros is concerned, it is just a matter of practicing on a given surface. Serena can win the French!!

So then why is she ranked higher than Testud?

Dawn: Ummm, why bring Sandrine into this? LOL, are you going to start attacking Miroslava and Angeles as well, just because I like them?

OK - So them why is Testud ranked higher than Mashona Washington?

That is how stupid your remark is..

This thread is entitled "Why Serena is headed for Number 1."

--- I don't think she is headed for number one, and I made some comments on the facts that rmc wrote. Venus Williams has a better chance.

Oh, and if Serena was against Schett in the first round at RG, she would have lost.

Oh, come on, I like Serena's game, but she will never become #1 player, first of all because she isn't comitted enough with tennis: 10 tournaments in the whole year????? who are you kidding?

Well, first let me tell you. I do consider Serena one if not the most dangerous player on hardcourts and grass.

I do believe that when Serena is on, very few players can have a chance against her on hardcourt and grass and maybe indoors.

but there are a few things that make me thing Serena would have a tough time getting the # 1.

1) She doesn't play enough, sure, it's easy to say if she plays more and gets the same results in a full schedule she could easily be # 1. However, Serena seems unable to keep the same level throughout a whole tournament, nevermind a whole season. Serena has gotten good results but she has been fresh in all tournaments, with a full schedule, she could not be that fresh, physically and mentally.
2) Serena is injury prone, and that's a consequence of her style of play, she would need to make changes on her game to play a full season injury free.
3) the Venus factor. Serena has never beaten Venus in an official match (forget GS Cup), that's a fact. She was playing terrific tennis at the US Open and simply fell apart against Venus, same happened in Wimbledon 2000. Unless Venus doesn't play or somebody else takes her out, Serena doesn't stand a chance.

That's for now

well as far as Serena saying she will play more, all we can do is wait is see. No one could have predicted 911 and that more than likely altered her schedule, as well as her being injured a huge chunk of time in the spring. So let's just wait and see if she plays more next year. She says she will, and personally, I believe her. And let's face it, and definitely won't play less (barring some life threatening illness--knock on wood).

re:Venus--I think Dawn pointed out that Capriati made it to #1, and she never beat Venus. So if she can do it, then Serena certainly can.
