Well, its no doubt racism, pure and simple. Anybody who has not condemned Sharapova yet must be a card carrying member of the KKK at the very least.
But to get serious for a moment folks, I don't remember "hundreds of threads" condemning Venus and Serena for, within a couple of weeks of their FIRST big wins, doing a little TV work.
What people blasted the Willies for was their long and colorful history of pulling out of tournament after tournament after tournament, often for injuries that nobody seemed to see when they played, Indian Wells being the most glaring example. People also blasted them for not playing each other, saying that if other top players did that, there would be no tour.
Then there was the little matter of the apparent tanking of matches, something almost everyone thought was going on for a time.
But anyway, I happen to think Sharapova can come in for a little criticism, for pulling out of L-A, but still managing to play World Team Tennis.
I think that is a questionable decision on her part and not in the end likely to make her too many new fans. More people in LA probably felt cheated than people in Newport Beach felt blessed by her appearance in that meaningless tank town event. And since she lost her singles match against a 15 year old, it looks even stranger.
But in her defense, she is going to come under the same kind of scrutiny now that Hingis, Kournikova and the Willies came under and so there will be people either cheering of condemning her every move very shortly.
Truth is, you don't seem to get much of a honeymoon any longer and being the queen in today's tennis is about as secure a job as the women had who married Henry VIII.
