just the other day she criticized Venus for the way she withdrew from the Sanex Championships, she has many times said negative things about the Williams, said a not so nice thing about Steffi regarding their Wimbledon final, and that's all fine she has a right to say what she wants. However if Jen says or does anything and she's the devil.
I don't think it's fair to say that Jen receives more critisism that Lindsay. Every player receives critisism at some point. To tell you the truth, i haven't heard all that much critisism directed at Jen, i don't think it is anymore than the amount that Lindsay would receive.
jrj: because hating on Jenn is an acceptable form of behavior
I've asked people similar questions many times, and get the same asnwer.
Its usually sounds something like "blah blah blah, excuse excuse...its not hating....blah blah...BS..."
I'd really like to know too, but I know I won't get an answer.
Hypocrits rarely make any sense.
Frankyl I don't think LIndsay or Jenn deserve to be bashed
Because it seems about 80% of this board are Jenn haters for whatever reason. I don't undertand it. She is a normal person like anyone else. No she's not perfect in what she says or how she acts; nor is Lindsay. The absolute hate and insulting of some tennis players on this board is quite sad.
That's because Lindsay is a nice person, and Lindsay actually thinks before she speaks, and it all makes sense. She puts things across in a diplomatic way. Even though she said Venus should have withdrew earlier if she was planning to play the Championships, she said that Venus has a choice, so she is tactful.
However, Jennifer is not really that nice. She likes to argue line calls, she likes to tell Venus to wait when Venus is serving and then complains when Serena takes a bit too much time to get ready during Capriati's own serve. That is bad sportsmanship, not nice. Also, Jennifer likes to question Serena's intergrity and I don't appreciate that the least bit. And Jennifer has this bloodshot/fierce look when she plays mtaches, and that is scary.
Although I am a Williams fan, there is no hate in my heart for any tennis player. I respect Lindsay more for being #1 than Jen, because Lindsay is just a superior tennis player. The media jumped behind Jen because hers was an intriguing story and she started the year so well. But after Wimbledon it became apparant to me, she was being overhyped. Plus at the Ericsson she dissed Serena. That is what really put her on Venus' bad side. They asked Venus who do you want to play in the finals. Venus stated "Capriati"! Thought about it awhile and said "Whoever is the highest ranked player" which was .....you guessed it Capriati. I guess the Ericsson placed Jen on some William's fan "S" list also.
Jrj are you insiguating that ONLY Williams fans dislike Jennifer? I stopped actually liking Jennifer when she showed that ass about Monica's grunting.
And it seems ever since she won her slams she has acted like she's on drugs on the court. YES! I am beginning to belive that she is on steroids and it is making her acr IRRATABLE on court. She argues every damn call anymore. Calls that are clearly good. She has a problem on the court .. and imo it is so plain to see that Jennifer has changed.
I was sick to see her on court demeanor while she played Testud. Arguing calls that were GOOD. hoping that the lines people would kiss her butt and give her free points. Sheesh even Hingis acts more mature than her. This is my opinion and before some of you get angry. Notice I didn't show any bias toward disliking her. Or call her any names. I have always stated that she deserves her ranking because she did what she had to do to get their..according to the ranking system.
Anyway.. alot of peopleFANS of (Seles/Hingis/Davenport/Juju/kim/Anna/ dislike players for many different reasons. Some due to hate/race/religion or whatever. I just don't like her court presence and interviews since she lost to Juju at Wimby.
I think the main reason you see a difference in the bashing of Capriati and Davenport, is because Capriati is at the top right now, and is therefore in the spotlight to be heard far more.
People are annoyed by Capriati's questioning of line calls and on court attitude? Well, believe me, even while Capriati was outside of the top 10 a year ago, she has had that sort of attitude which is generally fairly negative looking, and she has always questioned line calls and been very very irritable. The difference now is that she's on t.v. every time she plays which makes everything she does so much more noticeable.
Even if you look back to when Davenport first reached #1, she too got plenty of criticism from people which was probably quite unfair. People just making unnecessary personal insults etc. which were uncalled for.
In fact, if you look at pretty much any player while they've been at the top, you're always going to see a lot more "hatred" towards them for whatever reason. Monica was insulted to no end while she was at #1, but suddenly when she made her comeback, everyone was on her bandwagon. When Steffi was at #1, she was picked on plenty, but when she came back after being off tour for a while with injuries, plenty of people suddenly liked her a whole lot more. People like an underdog, and tend to focus on the good parts of them, but when you're #1, then it seems like people only tend to focus on the negatives (like why they shouldn't be #1, finding faults in their game or character etc.) and in a way that's to be expected because everyone has their own opinion as to who they feel is the best player.
I don't find it much of a surprise that Jennifer appears to be getting bashed more lately because she's in the spotlight and open to having every move she makes being picked apart by people. It comes with the territory of being in the media and in the public eye so much I guess. Just don't let it get to you, because the results and merit will do the talking themselves regardless of what anyone says.
I do like Jennifer but I'm starting to be annoyed by her cour attitude...always blaming others for her lapses of concentration (cells, noises from the crowd...) I think she needs to grow up a little otherwise the number of anti-Jenn remarks will grow even bigger....Have you ever seen Lindsay complaining during a match ? Of course, she has done it a few times but, usually, when things don't go her way, she is not the one to start yelling at everyone and everything....Still, I think Jennifer has a lot of talent and hopefully, she'll have a good season next year !
first Lindsay was angry with Steffi because when Steffi was asked if she would be back next year she said no, of course you aren't supposed to answer questions after a match according to Lindsay. She is though of course.
So Jen is on steroids very, very nice I'd expect no less, I've never seen Venus and Serena argue calls what the hell are they on?
Most of the Jen haters are Williams fans, and oh by the way I don't recall Jen using excuses every time she loses the way Serena did in Miami, the French and Wimbledon to Jen that is why Jen got pissed off with her. Oh I have a tummy ache (when she started losing) my leg hurts, my ass hurts it's always something. You have the nerve to say Jen showed no class! Serena went on to say "I should have won thoses matches" very classy.
The Jen haters have no problems when their favorites make classless remarks but jump on Jen like a hawk when she says something.
Good post Randy. There is no doubt the top is a tough place to be. Now Lindsay will have her turn there again to feel the pressure. It will not be easy for her I think, especially with no slam titles obviously. She will have to do some defending, whether she likes it or not.
I don't understand all this about you shouldn't do this, shouldn't say that, etc. on the court. Jenn is an emotional player and little things bother her. So what? That's the way she plays. Lindsay certainly has her share of bad moments on the court. She swears and talks to herself, gets down, looks angry, annoyed, fed up, all that. Jen maybe takes it a bit further, but that's her way of playing, and look how far it's gotten her. I enjoy the emotion. If all the players were stoic and silent on the court I don't think I'd be a fan for very long.
jrj--I think you really need to calm down and get a grip.
first of all, if you think Williams fans are the only ones who have a problem with Jen, then you are more delusional than I thought. All you have do is look at her oncourt attitude, and esp. her comments about Monica to understand why people have problems with her.
And when did Serena say "I should have won those matches". I believe she said she should have won the match at Wimbledon, when she was up a set and break, before dissolving into a puddle on the court. And btw in case it slipped your memory Serena was sick WHILE SHE WAS IN THE LEAD.
So just face it, Jen is an okay player, but she has no tact and definitely lacks class. She's not the worst person to ever step on a tennis court I'm sure, but the fact that you have to ask why people don't like her is astounding.
it's funny the same people who critcize Jen go out of their way to defend a first class prick who bring signs to a grand slam final and waves them around like he's at a high school football game. Who also goes onto the US Open court and dances after his daughter won in front of her opponent, I don't recall Jen doing that do you? At Wimbledon Serena said she should have won the French quarter vs Jen, the Ericcson match and the Wimbledon match but she was a "hyprocondriac" sounds like an excuse to me!
here's a goody out of the Serena archive, what a classy lady. If only Jen could be as classy!
Q. Is it getting to your head a little bit, your problems with Jennifer?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't have any problems. I just think my problem I'm a hypochondriac, that's it.
Q. What's your thought on the Henin-Capriati match-up?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It's a great match-up. Henin is playing great. I don't know. It should be a good match, for sure.
Q. Are you disappointed? Coming into a Grand Slam, you're at the opposite end of your sister, a potential final, the press, the fact that you aren't able to play your best?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Seems like every time I get up, I'm only to be put down. I don't know. Maybe I should go see like a doctor and just get -- like I said, I might be a hypochondriac, no kidding.
Q. Did the number of long points, so many deuces, that sort of thing, work against you, considering your condition?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I think, yeah, obviously. If I could have been able to put some of those points away instead of making an error, doing things like that, I think that definitely would have helped.
But some points she really just hit winners, she hit a good serve. She really played her game. She really went all out. She just went for it. Couldn't blame her.
Q. During the actual match today, did you think you might have to pull out at some point?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, after the first set, believe it or not, I was just like,"Ugh."
Q. It's been almost two years since you won a Slam title. Is that a bit surprising?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, of course. Really, really surprising. Really disappointing. Extremely upsetting. But, you know, I'm only 19. People out there, I still have a lot of time on my hands.
Q. Are you taking care of yourself physically the way you should be or do you think you just have bad luck by eating the wrong things?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I honestly think I have bad luck. I went home after the French and I worked really hard only to have this setback. It was pretty disappointing (tearing up), as you can see.
Q. When you look back on this match, how much do you think you'll attribute this loss to the way Capriati played and how much to the illness?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Like I said, I definitely think I should have won. I think she really picked up her game in the end. I think she really went out there, and I was up 30-Love. She really started turning her hips, hitting deep balls, really going for it. She definitely deserved the win because she picked up the level of her game, and mine kind of stayed at the same level.
Q. You have had a couple of big matches in the past against your sister, for example, a three-setter at Key Biscayne. Venus just ran away at the end of the match. Do you feel like you need to work on closing matches out?
SERENA WILLIAMS: No. I'm usually able to close out my opponents, for sure. This is the first time I haven't closed out an opponent in a minute. But usually I'm able to close out my opponents.
Q. Last year for example in the second set, you're up 4-2 with breakpoints to go 5-2.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Was I?
Q. Yes. Into the tiebreak, she won the last five points of the tiebreak.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Did she?
Q. Were you disappointed about not closing that set out?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Honestly, that was a year ago. If I'm still disappointed about that, then something's dreadfully wrong.
Q. What is your definition of a hypochondriac?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Someone that is always -- that is prone to get sick, prone to get hurt and injured, more prone than the next individual. That's me. That's Serena Williams. Under hypochondriac, they should put "Serena Williams."
Q. Do you think Venus can go on and win it now?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I definitely think so. She's playing great tennis. She's playing excellent. And Venus has a game and the mind and the physique, and she's really prepared because we both were working really hard after the French. So I know what we did. For sure.
Guess u answered your own question. Too bad u weren't in Germany...you could have given Dr Jenny a 2nd opinion, you both seem to know what was or wasn't wrong with Serena...and yet she couldn't even articulate what was wrong with her...maybe u could have diagnosed the problem .
I don't hate her but she is an ugly person...inside and unfortunately it keeps spewing out.
I'd have to see the evidence that supports the theory that there's more hate for Jenn than for Lindsay. Who's doing the hating? and, How is the hate being expressed?
If the evidence is what has been posted on this board, then I wouldn't know as I tend to avoid those types of threads.
If the evidence is based on how the media treats Jenn vs. Lindsay, then I'd have to totally disagree. The media has rightly recognized and practically praised Jenn for making an impressive comeback. During the US Open, for example, she was America's sweetheart. However, the media also seemed to try to thwart any possible scandal in which Jenn would have been involved (eg, Jenn's complaint about Seles' grunting in San Diego that resulted in a "noise" judge being brought on court to monitor Seles, Jenn's on-court expletives in Toronto, Jenn's questioning Serena's integrity with regard to illness at RG, etc.) IMO, as far as the media sees w/ regard to Jenn, it's all good.
Lindsay, on the other hand, has been pretty much ignored by the media this year. True, she hasn't won any majors (...yet......GO SERENA!!!--sorry, I had to add that). But Lindsay is an extraordinary player and imo more talented than Jenn. Also, Lindsay doesn't appear to have malice in her comments of other players. Nor does she cuss and argue on court (take for instance the bad call against her today during her match against Clijsters). Despite all of this, Lindsay gets no airtime. The only reason we're hearing about Lindsay these days is that she reached #1.
So if anything, the media loves Jenn and ignores/hates Lindsay.
Like I said, I don't know much about negative posts towards Jenn vs. Lindsay. And I don't have a tally. But I think its understandable that die-hard Williams fans and die-hard Seles fans would dislike Jenn. Williams fans may also have another reason to dislike Jenn because of what could perhaps be perceived as a "double standard". For example, imagine the magnitude of the negative reaction the Sisters would receive if they were to cuss and argue about line calls or attack Seles. I am unaware of Lindsay ever doing anything even close to warrant such a reaction (I don't believe Lindsay called Venus a liar, and have not seen any evidence from a reputable source).
Personally, I don't dislike Jenn and I wish her all the best--even though I am a Williams fan. And I am happy for her. But I really like Lindsay if only because she doesn't cuss and has a lot of class. Incidentally, Lindsay gained even more points today when she said that she thinks Venus would be #1 if Venus played more.
