It looks like some people just can't stand her. Why is that??? Yes, she's hyped to no end, but let's face it, the girl's good. She beat 3 very good players at Wimbledon, and yet some gave her no credit for that. In fact, if she played Loeffler-Caro tomorrow, I bet some would say she has no chance.

I love her game. She is still young and has lots of time to mature and find her game. Too much hype? Maybe, but are you really surprised anymore over the "hype" of upcomming players? IF you are, you shouldn't be and just expect beautiful hard hitting blondes to get lots of attention. Sounds like someone we all know too well eh?

Being surprised that she lost is one thing, but when it comes to comments like "wtf", "what went wrong?", "must've played like crap" then there's something wrong. That's insulting to Elena, who I might add, is light years ahead of Sharapova in the experience department.

I don't really get the feeling people don't like her. it's normal she's hyped giving the results she had in the challenger tournements last year, and she does look promising watching her play.

i wasn't aware that she was hated but i was stunned when i saw her practicing yesterday at the Rogers and she did nto scream once. not once. she was very muted and played a lovely game, easily beating her opponent. so much for the theory that she can't control her screaming.

imo sharapova's best surface is grass. she reached the junior wimbledon final last year, got to the 4th round of wimbledon this year and had that semis run the week before wimbledon on grass. i'm still dissapointed with this loss because of the progress she has made since the start of the year but elena L is good on hardcourts, she did reach the quarters at the AO one year (i think 2000?). but i have also noticed she isn't very popular on this board.

From my point of view I hate it when upcoming players are over-hyped...one only has to look at Dementieva and Hantuchova...it was only about 2 and 1 years ago that "everyone" was drooling over them.

Wait until Sharapova shows some real results before we call her the next best thing.

Both Serena & JenCap have lost to Elena in two easy sets & both at much older ages then Masha.

People are crazy if they think Elena is going to be an easy push-over for a 16 year old

I don't think Maria is hated. Granted there is a lot of hype and her rise in the ranks has been very impressive, however she is young, and inexpirenced. You can expect her to consistantly beat players who have been on the tour and have the expirence to beat young players such as herself. A good win for the streaky Likhovtseva. She deserves 100% of the credit.

No she didn't. Harkleroad and Bovina are very serviceable players, but no more than that. Harkleroad, being only 18, may improve markedly. Bovina's 20. What you see is what you get. And Dokic has been in free fall for a year.

On the contrary. Maria Sharapova is very popular at WTA World. She is getting alot of publicity and attention. And Maria receives some criticism too, which is par for the course.

Maria does sometimes tone down her grunting, TC. She was pretty quiet at Wimbledon against Jelena Dokic. But I think when she tones down the grunting her tennis can become passive. And I wonder if that's what happened tonight.

I want Masha to let it rip with her grunting and her groundies!

maybe cos they find it annoying that shes so hyped when she hasnt accomplished that much. its more about her looks and potential to be a big marketing machine for the tour.
