In Russian, the women have an "a" added to their last name.
Hence: Krasnoroutskaya, Kournikova, Dementieva, Petrova, etc.
The men DO NOT have an "a" at the end.
Hence: Kafelnikov (if he had a sister, her surname would be Kafelnkova)
Thats why her last name is Safina, and Marats is not.
Its just thier custom.
