It is huge, 18k seats.
People book AA because they expect elite and prestige match-ups (particularly involving Americans) to be played there. So even if LA matches attract more people than Grand Stand matches it still seems empty.

LA is general admission for 80% of the seats. You can go to EVERY court! Why sit down for a whole match? I know when I go, I move around all day. The big courts are not the ones to be on the first few days, all the smaller courts are where it is at! Everyone knows that! :p

I'll be at Grandstand tomorrow at 3pm - look how crowded it'll be then!

Its only the early rounds on a weekday. A lot of people are at work. While some schools start next Tuesday, some have already started. It will be sold out for the long weekend.
Exactly.
Some peopl are off this week for vacation; others will be off next week. In addtion, the stands will be full on Friday because most people will have a four daay wekeend. Plus, most schools in the NYC area are not back in session until next Tuesday-Thursday.

Armstrong is incredibly hard to get more than 50% full.
You need a big name in some massive drama to get things going.

The best court is the Grandstand. There's always unreal drama over there.
My favorite court! Watched McHale/Bartoli and Peer/Stephens there last year - packed and amazing atmosphere!

Why would anyone sit up high in Ashe or Armstrong on Day 1 or 2 when you can be front row to a much more competitive match?

What is an "underrated court"? Courts are rated by who?

As "In The Zone" said, people prefer to go on smaller courts to be closer. Plus they schedule a lot of not-so-interesting matches on that court, partly because the first round for men last on 3 days.

It's the reality of the US Open that Ashe and Amstrong are often empty. Sure it's annoying now, but later in the week, it would be annoying for fans if they couldn't see a match because the second biggest stadium is full.
