#1 She hasn't won a slam this year and she hasn't done a thing on clay. I guess I feel the same way some do about Venus. Some say Vee isn't the real #1 due to her not playing indoors. Well imho the same could be said for Linds and her not playing on clay at all this year.

#2 She hasn't dominated Venus or Serena this year

#3 Because she knows in her heart that the WTA ranking system needs an overhaul. And that Vee is the true #1, in thoughts and heads.

Please no bashing okay just giving my opinion.

Peace and love.

Venus didn't do a thing on clay either. Lindsay had a more consistent year, so she deserves it. She played well on 3 of the 4 surfaces, while Venus only played well on hardcourt and grass and that's about it

Yes well okay, but back to Lindsay and Why I think she feels she's not #1. I just truly feel that Linds is the kind of person who is not a player hater so to speak. She gives credit where it due. I feel that she knows that in her heart that she is not really deserving of the #1 ranking. Which imho is a blow to the WTA tennis game. Well not a HUGE blow but a bit of a farce. I mean imho this is the only sport for women where it is possible to be ranked#1 and have that person who is ranked that postition truley not feel they deserve it. Is this really good for the player? Imho I say no. I feel the same way also about Martina for when she was ranked #1. Sorry to say the ranking sytem is not 100% fixed yet. think the ladies deserve better.

PEE, I think that Venus did pretty good on clay this year , she did alot better than most. In fact she made it to a clay semifinal and won a clay tourney this year. In fact she may have made it to 2 semi's. Not so sure though. So she did well on 3 surfaces sweets.

Dawn Marie sounds like you are just echoing what Lindsay has already said herself.

As for Venus, getting knocked out early in Paris was not a pretty sight, but she didn't do that bad since she did win her third title on clay in Hamburg.

Hiya Jake

True enough but what I was trying to get at was worded wrong somewhat in my topic. In other words I think the ranking system is so flawed that it can be demean alot of players. Anytime you got a #1 ranked pro player and THEY feel that their rank is not true to form then something must be changed and changed right. Imho the WTA made silly changes for this up coming year, why can't they just do what the ATP tour does?

By the way please note that my topic is worded backwards, I didn't feel like changing it and I knew whoever read this would understand what I meant.

The thing that beats me about Davenport is if she really meant what she said or if she was being "overly modest." One of the only things that annoys me about her is her sometimes "wishy-washy diplomacy."

For example, if being numero uno wasn't so important to her why did take a wild card into an extra tournament (Linz) and risk injury by playing four weeks straight?

A possible reason would be that she wanted to rack up the money but I think that would be chump change to everything she already has.

Maybe she was loading up points in the hopes that she would overtake the rankings in Australia.

Or maybe she just doesn't know math. (It is just, what, 10 or 11 points after all.)

This makes me want to go back to my FoxSports tape of the Filderstadt final. I think Lindsay had some interesting things to say about Martina Hingis and the number 1 ranking in it.

Dawn Marie - Not that I diasagree, but isn't that why YOU think Lindsay isn't #1?

What Lindsay herself said was that when she played Venus, she felt she was playing the best player in the world. I didn't get the feeling she over-intellectualized about it. That's just how she feels.

I think Lindsay is number 1. She deserves it. She has the most ranking points, so I think she is number 1

I completely agree with cynicole.
Okay, Lindsay said when she plays Venus she feels she is playing the best player in the world (of course Lindsay isn't included in that, because she can't play herself). She just says that Venus is her strongest opponent, and she doesn't deny she's losing to her. But she didn't say 'Jen should be no. 1' or 'Venus should be no. 1'. I mean, why did she play Linz and because of that 4 weeks in a row when she knows she's risking injuries with that ? The only reason is to become year-end no. 1. And she made it really in the last moment, when she already was injured. So it must have a meaning for her. It must have been a goal. So I think that Lindsay thinks she deserves it.
But what she said sounded different. She said 'a no. 1 should do well at Grand Slams, and I didn't'. Why did she say that ? Because of 2 reasons:

1. Because she thinks so. Like for every other player, Grand Slams are the most important things. And she failed to win them, so she could not be satisfied with the season. But does that means she has to sit down for the rest of the season and cry ? No, she saw the chance to become year-end-no. 1 which is a fine achievement as well, and she took the opportunity. Now she can sttill consider the year as successful.
2. Lindsay is quite smart. If she said 'I think I'm the absolute best player in the world and I'm completely deserving the ranking', EVERYONE (including you, dawn) would have jumped on her. 'How can she say that with no Grand Slam final, she always lost against Venus' etc. So obviously that would be the dumbest thing to do. So she is politically correct or humble and says nice things about Jennifer and Venus and admits she's not satisfied with her Grand Slam results.
BUT I'm completely sure that she really believes she is deserving the no. 1. She had that goal, she fought hard for it. Venus didn't even try to get it, so why should she deserve it ? Jennifer tried to defend her ranking, and she didn't have to do much for that, but she failed in the end, so why why should she deserve it. Lindsay did what was necessary. Give her credit for that. The ranking-system was available to everyone before the season. Everyone could figure out what was to do to become no. 1. It's no miracle.

Lindsayfan,

if you have a problem with something that Dawn wrote, why don't you direct your post to her instead of trotting out the old "Williams fans" staple.
Dawn is not the spokesperson for Williams fans, okay?

Thanks

[email protected], well we could trot out a number of reasons why Lindsayfan has a point and you figure in many of them. Let another point of View wash over you occassionaly, never know, you may learn to appreciate something new (Althea taught me that and I'm proud to admit it)

Adrian,

how do you know what my opinion is if I never stated it? I guess you're making the ASSumption (again) that all Williams fans think alike.

As for all these examples that I'm supposed a part of? Please start trotting, because I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

If Lindsayfan has a problem with this thread, then she should make up one of her own in response. I have a question.

Why do Davenport fans feel they always have to comment to such questions or state their disapproval of threads like this?

Lindsay IS #1 in the rankings. You don't have to go around defending her. The ranking system is speaking for itself.

Oh yeah, Adrian, I don't think anybody REALLY takes anything you suggest seriously. So....pwoof-be-gone

Lindsay is number 1, she played and won tournament enough to be there, so she deserves...
But Venus played clay, and won a tournament... Davenport played on clay??
I don't remember

Several posters, who are obviously NOT Williams fans, are suggesting that Venus had a horrible year on clay. She DID manage to win Betty Barclay (Hamburg), and the rest of the season was mediocre. I don't remeber Davenport even showing up clay court season. Then, again, I'm obviously NOT a Davenport fan. Either way, there comes a time in BOTH player's season that they're somewhat of a no-show.

Well dear Moon, one may not be able to get to Sanex anymore, but many remember you for all the wrong reasons.

Poor Hail, can't post a thing in defence unless it is a personal insult, must be so terrible to be so unarmed.

At least Lindsay prooved her worth on 3 of the 4 surfaces, one more then Venus did and last time I looked all surfaces counted, not half.

The line is Lindsayfan has a point, a certain section refuses to accept it (The sames ones all the time, just roll in with personal insults, attacks, accuse others of playing the victim, when they have built their whole posting criteria on it) then cry because they get lumped together. I remember what EC used to call you on the other board, the very same Williams fans posting here in this thread.(Except for Williams_Rulez). I'd repeat it, but I'm too much of a gentleman.

Maybe my math is bad but lindsay did it on 3 out of 4 surfaces: Hard, grass, indoors.
Venus also did it on 3 surfaces too: grass, hard, clay. if you say that Venus only won one tournament of clay so did Lindsay on grass.
