I completely agree with cynicole.
Okay, Lindsay said when she plays Venus she feels she is playing the best player in the world (of course Lindsay isn't included in that, because she can't play herself). She just says that Venus is her strongest opponent, and she doesn't deny she's losing to her. But she didn't say 'Jen should be no. 1' or 'Venus should be no. 1'. I mean, why did she play Linz and because of that 4 weeks in a row when she knows she's risking injuries with that ? The only reason is to become year-end no. 1. And she made it really in the last moment, when she already was injured. So it must have a meaning for her. It must have been a goal. So I think that Lindsay thinks she deserves it.
But what she said sounded different. She said 'a no. 1 should do well at Grand Slams, and I didn't'. Why did she say that ? Because of 2 reasons:
1. Because she thinks so. Like for every other player, Grand Slams are the most important things. And she failed to win them, so she could not be satisfied with the season. But does that means she has to sit down for the rest of the season and cry ? No, she saw the chance to become year-end-no. 1 which is a fine achievement as well, and she took the opportunity. Now she can sttill consider the year as successful.
2. Lindsay is quite smart. If she said 'I think I'm the absolute best player in the world and I'm completely deserving the ranking', EVERYONE (including you, dawn) would have jumped on her. 'How can she say that with no Grand Slam final, she always lost against Venus' etc. So obviously that would be the dumbest thing to do. So she is politically correct or humble and says nice things about Jennifer and Venus and admits she's not satisfied with her Grand Slam results.
BUT I'm completely sure that she really believes she is deserving the no. 1. She had that goal, she fought hard for it. Venus didn't even try to get it, so why should she deserve it ? Jennifer tried to defend her ranking, and she didn't have to do much for that, but she failed in the end, so why why should she deserve it. Lindsay did what was necessary. Give her credit for that. The ranking-system was available to everyone before the season. Everyone could figure out what was to do to become no. 1. It's no miracle.
