Henin needs henin to win this match.
She should underscore her 2 slam titles this year with the No 1 ranking. No one should win 2 slams in a year and not have made number 1. Its just not good kharma :). She deserves it. Her style of play is different to many players and that is a positive thing. When the game is getting more and more dominated by wonderful tall big serving powerful players, the contrast of a different type of player is good.

Henin needs the ranking to really lay down the gauntlet to the williams sisters and anyone else who thinks that they have the balls, including clijsters, capriati, davenport mauresmo, seles (god willing, but i doubt it), pierce and the great russians....... she needs make the statement 'sure you are great, but im no. 1 now and if you think you are better then you have to come play a lot and prove it. They probably will, and that will be good too. :)

Clijsters needs henin to win this match
Yes, she does! Kim is a really great player. She is too good for all the crap that is talked about her being the only No 1 without a slam. Beating justine tomorrow will not put to rest the simmering dissatisfaction that she is No 1 but still slamless. In fact, it will get worse :( . They will start to say that she can only do it in the lesser tournaments.
She is way too good to endure that. Let justine get to No 1, and let Kim come out in the slams next year and prove what a great player whe really is, and get No 1 the old fashioned way that people will have to respect :) .

basically I think this is bullshit. Henin doesn't need to win. she wont up and die if she loses. Tennis doesn't need her to win either. The sport will go on. its not going anywhere.

what tennis truly needs is two players to come out and compete with the intensity of competitors and rivals. thats all tennis needs. may the best player win.

GO KIM!
I dont think that I said anyone was going to die :)

I think that henin deserves to have achieved the number 1 ranking, having won 2 slams this year. After all, she could get an injury in the morning and never play again. I just think that what she has done this year is worth a 1 ranking.

I think that the championships and next season would be really exciting if henin went in as no1. I think it would excite the world, bring in more fans, make people interested yada yada. I think she owuld strugle t keep it. It would be intersting to see her try to defend her points and ranking at the slams.

I think that in the long run clijsters should be a no1 player. She is awesome, and her personality is tremendous, so whe is a great player to romiote the game. Im a ig fan. But she should aget the number 1 ranking with slams. I think she might play better when the attention of being no 1 without slams is off her, thats all. :)
Thats true sam L

Although clijsters is def good enough to win in that tournament............and I'd like to se her win it too, but id prefer to see her win some slams......

Get real. The Balls? IMPO Cheater wouldnt been looking at that US Open trophy if two of the top hardcourt players hadnt been out with injury. Her style of play is different? With the the exception of the backhand how? She all but switched to the power game when she went running to Pat Etchebarry. If Cheater wins, thats nice, she would've earned it. Not by noone not having balls to challenger her..
groan.......... :(

this was not a thread to disrespect the wiliams sisters. Nor was it a thread to suggest that no one had the balls to compete with henin. And no, I did not say that she didn't try to hit hard
This was not EVEN a partisan thread.......

Im just saying that henin getting to No 1 would be jsutified and would set things up to get everyone enthusiastic about the fun for the rest of of the season and next year.

And in terms of playing style, yes,I think that she is different. Shorter stature, so not so many service winners....her one-handed backhand is different and not just cos she hits with one hand, but cos she has a lot of variety on it, she uses angles really well....yada yada.

Its not a criticism of other players, just saying that the way she plays is a nice contrast to see.

Justine isn't in great contrast to the others in the top ten.
Sure, knizzle, she s not a serve-volleyer, but....... doe she play different from davenport, williams, williams capriati, etc eh?, ...Um yeah, and.....

johnny mac thinks she does

bud collins thinks she does

martina navratilova thinks she does

pam schriver thinks she does

Mary-joe fernandez thinks she does

Mary carillo thinks she does

but FAR more importantly (ahem)......
I think she does... :) :) :) :) :)

Where´s the variety?! When she comes to the net, she rarely wins the point...she hits a one-handed backhand?! Cool, but ask Venus what she thinks of that backhand.

All baseline-game to me...
well being a baseliner doesnt mean that you are the same as all other baseliners. I know what you mean. baseliner and servevolleyer is a better contrast. But there are so few serve volleyers at the moment :(

So some baseliners play a bit differently and that is good.

seles plays from the back, but not quite the same way as the williams for example. It subtle, I know, but it matters. NOt to say that one is better than another, jsut that variteymamkes for great tennis to watch :)
Knizzle said:
What about Mauresmo then?? The only thing Justine does different is slice the backhand and there is another top tenner who does that just as much.
Great example knizzle, I agree. ASctually I didnt say that henin was the only player to play differently, just that she is different from some of the other grat players that are out there today.

mauresmo........

I like her variety a lot. All the looping shots, but the power as well. great shot making ability, but a bit mentally fragile.....

Its all about the contrasts... :)

Fogive me, but what is with the "because shes smaller lets feel sorry for her" crap?
I forgive you, but um, I dont think that anyone said that......... :)

I sure didn't. ;)

If you are tall, then its easier to serve big, and that is an advanatage in tennis. Look at average heights of the general population and tennis players........... HELLO!!! Player who are shorter have to find different ways to win and that is not better or worse, but its interesting. Michael Chang is a good example. I wasnt a big fan, but I really respected how he developed skills that suited his physique, compensated for the fact that he was't going to get as many service winners.

Can't we just enjoy the game?! All the girls are providing really good and exciting fare for us tennis fans. It'll be exciting to see how 2004 pans out.

As for Justine and Kim's match tomorrow...I say they BOTH need to win. Let's see who actually does!
I agree vs1. yup, they are doing a great job.
Im jsut saying that a change in the rankings will help things be even more exciting and will help everyone enjoy things more. :) :) :)

Like I said this is not a partisan thread.
BTW, can yall tell who i prefer....kim or justine?

Venus is 6'1 and her second serve still gives her problems. Lindsay is one of the tallest on the tour and I dont see her serves (nowdays) helping her at all against the belgians  Jennifer is about as tall as Serena and her serve certainly isnt an overpowering weapon. Do you know how they get those serves? Its by constant tooling and improvement in that area, not because they were bigger and taller. Cheater has proven this summer that you can have a consistant serving speed with the taller players, how did she do it? By improving.
And your point being that "height is not an advantage on serve"? hmmmm..riiiiiiiiiighty-ho....... :tape: :tape: :tape: :tape: :) :) :) :)

seriously, though, I would much rather "tool alnd improve" with more inches than less inches. OMG that sounded rude!!!!!!!!!!....... eek!

nice thread, i didn't agree with your last one (can't remember what it was) but this one is money.

Tennis needs Henin to take the #1 away from Kim because Kim is still the Williams sisters pushover, kissing up to them and stuff (like saying Serena is still the true #1). Whereas Justine is getting right in the Williams sisters face and not really respecting them as much. If Justine's #1, V & S have to go after her because they've got something to prove against Justine (they have nothing to prove against Kim). The Williams fans know this and that's why you see some of them hating so much on Justine (or in the case of the clever Tee Rexx, spinning against her) and being luvvy-duvvy over Kim.

Clijsters is a class act. When she deals with the press she wont get dragged into a bitchin' match :) . Some folk here could learn from that ;) , I respect her for that. Its so unexpected from someone that dates Mr hewitt :p

Its not a matter of sucking up, IMO, just dealing with the media and being professional, respectful and honest. Sure she recognises that she is not the player that the other pros think the best in the world right now, not till she has some slams under her belt. In private, I bet she wants to beat everyone elso real bad, maybe so bad that she gets too nervous on the big occassions.....

Would be nice to see her get some slams next year. ..... :)

I dont thikn Kim wants Henin to win just bc she knows she isnt a worthy number 1
course not, but in the long run life might end up being better for her if she has to go back to trying to win slams rather than dealing with all this "should she be or shouldnt be No 1" crap all the time.
