Just a few years ago there were matches that were taking under 40min but not anymore. Even matches like 6-0 6-2 now run for longer than an hour. Does anyone have any explanation?

well most players throw in 20 ue's a match now even when they win easily, so if you give your opponent 20 free points its going to take longer to win. players also take so long between points than they ever did, the toweling down that so effects the mens game has infected the womens as well now.

Yeah, not that long ago I remember Clijsters having a USO match that was 32 minutes or something ridiculous.

I don't think it is anything to do with playing style or quality. I think it is more to do with longer changeovers, and the break at the end of sets also adds some time.
