Some of them are saying that Clijsters chokes too much in big matches and is undeserving of the #1 ranking:rolleyes:! Most of them say that Heninn-Hardenne can't handle Venus and still isn't a good enough hardcourt player!

But they overlook the fact that Venus hasn't won a slam since the 2001 US Open! Yeah, it may of been Serena beating her in all the slam finals since, but it still is a drought and who knows how she will handle the pressure? Henin hasn't had many chances this year of playing Venus so she may now be able to overcome her mental block! I still feel that if you had to pick favourites out of the top players this is how it would go:

1. Henin-Hardenne= Playing the best out of anyone since Wimbledon
Champion or Finalist

2. Clijsters= This week of rest will only do her good and it's only a matter of time before she wins a big one
Finalist or Champion

3. V. Williams= Hasn't played since Wimbledon so will be rusty. Good bet to make semis and maybe further
Semifinal or Final

4. Capriati= You may be thinking why I put her ahead of Davenport. Well, she has been taking all the top players to three sets this year and she'll be hungry
Semifinal or Quarterfinal

5. Davenport= Has had a good year but not great. If she gets off to a slow start against someone like Henin-Hardenne or Clijsters, her on-court negativity may get the best of her

Contenders: (no order)

Mauresmo
Dementieva (if her serve holds up)
Rubin

Longshots: (no order)

Zvonareva
Petrova
Myskina
Krasnoroutskaya
Sharapova
Suarez
Sugiyama

Venus would have to be put over Justine and Kim for a couple of reasons:

Since 2000, Venus has only lost two summer hardcourt matches (2001 Bank of the West and the 2002 US Open). No other player (including her sister) can claim that.

Other than Lindsay Davenport, she is the only active player who has acutally won the damn tournament.

Another fact is that Kim and Justine have not gotten past the fourth round of the USO. Do I think they will get past the fourth round? Probably. If they meet Venus, will they be able to beat her? Probably not.

Why? Because they have an injury excuse to fall back on if she loses. In fact, I expect them to play up the injury even if she wins.

If Justine and Venus play in the final, she wont win 6-2 6-1 or 6-2 6-3 like usual

she'll win 7-5 6-4

but thats about it.

Why?
Venus does everything Henin does but better.
Actually thats not true, but on hardcourts it doesn't matter.

Henin is Venus's biggest threat. If Venus is isn't 80% she wont win. But by the stage of that tournament, unless she pulls an Australian Open 01, she usually is.

Venus serves faster, runs faster, hits harder, is mentally stronger, and has a whopping h2h record.

And at 5 all in the tiebreak, the 2 latter factors is all that matters.

And don't even give me Clijsters.

She's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario with a bowflex

What are you saying? Venus ISN'T injured? I think it is called thinking positive. I, for one, think that Venus has the talent to do it. But it is asking a lot of an injured player who hasn't played in two months. The situation sort of sucks. If Kim or Justine do win, then everyone will say it is because of the injuries of Serena and Venus. Let's face it, it is most likely true. Do you honestly think that if the Williams's were healthy that anyone would actually even be mentioning any other possible champions? If so it would only be to hype what would obviously be a Williams lock. No one outside of the Williams family has won it since 1998.

It seems to me you are trying to downplay Venus's injury so it will be a sweeter victory for Kim, if she does win it.

There are good reasons why people should think Venus will win: her excellent record on this surface and against the current top players.

There are also good reasons to think why Mrs. Hardenne or Clijsters will win: they've actually played BETTER overall than Venus in the last 52 weeks.

Anything can happen, but the winner will come from these three: Venus, Clijsters or Mrs. Hardenne.

I know it's nothing new, but to say that one of them WILL DEFINITELY win, at this stage, is nothing but biased speculation.

WhY?

1 Because VENUS played in 5 of the last 6 GS finals.
2. Besides SERENA, she has defeated, the majority of all of the other players.
3. VENU took care of Clijsters while severely injured in the Wimbey semis.
4. VENUS dominates JHH on hard courts
5. VENUS has only had one legitimate loss to Clijsters, the other was a technical walk over.
6. Finally, Kim has a tendency to choke and may have lost some momentum after her loss to Lina K.

Big Venus fan that you are, note that Venus has PLAYED in TEN Slam Finals, Winning FOUR. Two from Lindsay, one from Justine, and one fron Serena. She lost SIX slam finals, one to Martina Hingis, and the other five to Serena.

Perhaps you were sleeping!!??

Have you considered the fact that we ARE fans, and the tournament hasn't started yet?

All fans believe their favorites have a better chance than they really do. The word 'fan' is derived from 'fanatic', not 'clear-minded thinker'.

Venus is going to win. Nothing will convince me otherwise til she withdraws or loses. Objectivity is what I use when I talk about OTHER players.

 Well said, Volcana, well said indeed. Why is it so hard to understand that when we analyze our faves we are doing it with about 30% head and 70% heart?

Heck there are even fans who really believe that Anna K. is going to eventually get her game together and be a force to be reckoned with.
I often shake my head when people are disappointed with Alex too, but then I try to understand that they see their faves the way I see Venus. The only difference is that picking Venus to win is much closer to reality than picking Alex or Anna. ;)

Geez...it's not just 'some Williams fans' who are saying that. Many fans of other players are saying it too :p

btw, if you haven't noticed, fans don't have to be right 100% of the time. I'm not a 'Williams fan' but I still think both Justine and Kim will need to pull off small miracles to beat Venus at the open. I'm not quite sure why but Venus doesn't like losing to people in the top 10 who don't share her last name (for the past couple of years anyway)...here's a wild guess: I'm willing to bet Venus has a better chance of losing to someone ranked between 11 and 50 early on than she does of losing to someone ranked between 1 and 10 inclusive (btw, you Venus fan's can't use that to say that 'she beat herself'). any takers? :tape:

I dare anybody who believes Venus will 100% for sure win the Open to take the first plane to Vegas and put your money where your big mouths are.......Just make sure you keep your houses out of it.

it would take a 100% Venus now to beat the Belgian sisters and this is a fact considering the current form of Kim/Juju.

Just stats, history..it shows how it was..but doesn't mean it will stay that way. Both Justine and Kim have improved a lot this year, breaking with all their past negative stats.

Serena had won 4 GS's in a row..great statistics. But it doesn't mean she will win the next 4 too (as already proven ;))
