Hello, I am a new member to the board.
The reason for posting this topic is that Sabatini, Novotna, and Martinez are all the winners of 1 Grand Slam only (may be Martinez could still win more) and there all have one-handed backhand, and they have their own unique styles. Thus, I want to ask the members, whose career is better?
In my opinion, Martinez should be the most talented of the three, and I think her career is already ahead of Novotna's. If she has some excellent results in the next two years (e.g. reaching another 3-5 Grand Slams Final/SF/QF) and more Tier I titles, I think her career will be the best of the three.

I have to disagree. Three very talented players but for me Sabatini was the best of them. You have to look at the fact that Gaby was challenging and competing in two great eras. She was playing toward the end of the Navratilova-Evert era in the late '80s and was up there mixing it with Seles-Graf too and had chances to overtake these two legends at #1 at one stage. Martinez benefitted slightly from the abscence of Graf ( injury ) and Seles ( stabbing ) though she has done very well. Novotna needed Graf and Seles to be under par to make her biggest achievements though it was mainly her mental frailty that held her back. And yes, I saw them all play at their peak. The Sabatini of year end '90 and the first 8 months of '91 in particular was an outstanding player.

Gabriela Sabatini. Because a lot of reasons, her game, her beauty, such a style. I think we'll never see someone like her again.

I miss her

All three mentioned have had great careers, but we could maybe ignore their Slam titles because neither has more than one so that's a level playing field. Rankings wise, Gaby came closest to taking the number 1. So she gets the points there. Conchita has the most clay court titles of any active player so that's points for her. Jana, well, I have to say that as great as she might have been, I always thought she was lucky in her career. Not only did she have a limited depth to competition, but her Wimby win left me with question marks.

Admittedly Jana should have won the title the year she had Graf, but great players have the bottle to finish the job. Indeed, when she did win against Tauziat, she gave me the impression that a tougher opponent would have beaten her because mentally she was weak. I know you can only beat what is in front of you, but this brings me back to Gaby. She won her US Open in the middle of a tough field. Conchita's Wimbledon title was helped by Steffi losing in round one and Martina being beyond her best.

So, I think my conclusion is that Gaby had the best career. She was pushed the most, had the stronger competition and got closest to number 1. Aside from that, she was the first true icon of the game. Would Anna K be able to make so much out of her looks had Gaby not made everyone sit up and take note of tennis players? Gaby's contribution to the game was bigger than her. She was also universally liked. No other player earnt the depth of feeling she had.

Sorry for turning this into a Gaby love-in, but only when you do this do you realise how good she was.

I say Sabatini too, she was unlucky that when she finally had some mental edge over Steffi in 90-91, there was another player who was probarly mentally even thougher in the name of Monica. Without these two there is no doubt she would have been a dominating number 1 while I don`t think that would have been the case with the other two

Sorry Snuffkin, but you are wrong: Sabatini's highest ranking was 3# (it may sound strange but its true) . Conchita and Jana reached 2#

Let's see some stats:

TITLES WON

[32] Conchita (includes 1 GS, 4 italian Opens, 2 Hilton Heads, 2 German Opens)

[27] Sabatini (includes 1 GS, 2 Chases, 4 italian Opens, 2 Hilton Heads, 1 Lipton)

[24] Novotna (includes 1 GS, 1 chase, 1 Zurich, 1 Moscow)

CAREER WIN/LOSS RECORD

Sabatini: 626/187
Conchita: 613/216 (will probably change)
Novotna: 533/214

GRAND SLAM HISTORY

-Sabatini:reached 28 QF-----> 18 SF-----> 3 Finals
Conchita:reached 22 QF-----> 12 SF-----> 3 Finals
Novotna:reached 22 QF------> 9 SF------> 4 Finals

CAREER HIGHEST RANKING

Novotna & Conchita: 2#
Sabatini: 3#

OTHER FACTS

-Novotna: 3 olympic medals (2 silvers, 1 bronze)
-Conchita: 2 olympic medlas (1 silver, 1 bronze). Helped Spain to win 5 Fed Cup titles.
-Sabatini: 1 olympic medal (1 silver)
As you can see, they have quite similar stats. Its very difficult to say who's the better, coz Conchi won more titles, Sabatini won more matches, Novotna won much more doubles titles (76)... I wont say who's better coz I'm biased since Conchita is my fave player.

However, I'd like to ask you something: Do you think that a player who wins 2 GS (eg Mary Pierce) is better than those players who have won just one?

Gabriela Sabatini is head and shoulders above the other two , even though she only reached #3.

They were 3 big champions ( Conchita still is), those players who deserved to be the no 1 but that for different reasons they never reached. ( i think any of them deserves it more than Jennifer for example if you value the complete careers). I cant believe how many GS Qf and Sf they reached and its sad they just could win 1 title.
The 3 have a big career but i will say Conchita is, cause she has more titles, same performance in GS, more Fed Cups, and cause......

CONCHITA'S CAREER IS STILL RUNNING!!! and i am sure she can win more tournaments, more matches and to continue improving her career.

I still think Conchita's career is still no better than Gaby's, but if she keeps playing for 2-3 years with some excellent results, then I would say Martinez's career WILL BE the best of the three.
However, I think they all peaked at different times; Sabatini peaked in 90-91, Martinez peaked in 94-95, while Novotna peaked in 97-98 (Novotna also had a mathematical chance of being No.1 had she won the US open in 98, but she lost in SF to Hingis, despite being one break up in the final set).
Does anyone know their head-to-head records? I only know that Martinez does not have the advantage against these two players in their head-to-head stats, but I can still remember that Martinez totally dominated against Sabatini in 93-96, winning the last four or five of their encounters.
Last but not least, I think it is difficult to say some of these players benefited from the injuries/absence of the other players. For example, Graf lost to McNeil in Wimbledon 94, but Martinez defeated McNeil 10-8 in the final set. Also, Novotna defeated Tauziat, but Tauziat defeated Zvereva, while Zvereva defeated Graf in straight sets in Wimbleson. Thus, all I want to say is that Novotna and Sabatini always had difficulty of closing out some big matches that they would have won (e.g. Wimbledon final in 91 and 93 respectively), while Martinez always has some mental problems when playing Graf and Seles, always giving up the matches easily, as she (I think) may always have the feeling that she can't beat Graf and Seles. However, Conchita also competed in different eras, like playing Graf/Sanchez in the mid-90s, and the young players nowadays. But her year in 1995 was amazing, as she could beat anyone in the tour (again, except against Graf and Seles), and actually I think her SF loss to Sanchez Vicario in Wimbledon 95 was a great match that lots of people ignored, as she came back from 3-6 2-5 down to win the second set, but her blisters problem in both feet resulted in her lost the final set.
Thus, to sum up, I think all three are great players, but Sabatini SHOULD HAVE the best career (she should won 3-5 GS titles in her career), but Martinez's career WILL BE the best of the three.
Watch out, Martinez would be (at least) back in the top 15 next year.

All three have great careers. All three are very talented players. All three have so many in common.Whose career is better ? IT's not easy to say , because I like them all three, but I think it's Conchita. She is still playing ,Gaby and Jana are retired, so she will win more matches and titles (maybe a grand slam), but I think we can that all three are great champions.

On big titles
1. Sabatini
2. Novotna
3. Martinez

All have 1 slam, but Gaby 2 WTA year-end championships, and Jana one.

Rankings-wise, Jana and Gaby were both a match away from #1-and both should have won those matches. Sabatini had her chance at the 1991 Wimbledon final, falling to Steffi 8-6 in the third, while Jana would have been #1 if she hadn't choked a third set lead awayt to Hingis in the 1998
US open semis. Conchita never came close to #1.
Last thought: Counting titles alone seems to me an unfair method of judging, since Martinez has A LOT
of tier 3-5 type wins, even as a top player. All 3 had great carreers, but unless Martinez wins the major her game is made for (the French) she is a clear third to Gaby and Jana.

Are you kidding? Of course Conchita!!!

Ok, now that I've said that, I think Gabriela and Conchita are ahead of Jana-of-the-outstanding-doubles-career. Also, I am tired of hearing about how Conchita's titles are all tier 10 titles, look at the numbers TOT posted.

Between Gabriela and Conchita, I'd still say Conchita, she's been around for so many years and has been consistant. Gabriela retired at what? 26? don't tell me that's old or the end of her career, she had a few good years on tour, but she couldn't really compete with the likes of Conchita by then. Conchita has been injured all year this year, and still posted a Wimbledon QF, in 2001. She was kicking ass in 1989 too. That's an outstanding carreer to me.

Well, in my opinion, it depends on whether u are talking about who was the greatest TENNIS player or who was the greatest SINGLES player.

Undoubtedly, in my mind - sabatini was the greatest singles player, but if u mean overall then jana was by far the best as she was WAY better than the others in doubles.

Seeing I value doubles just as highly as singles, I would have to say that I believe Jana has had the best career.

Hello, I think it is difficult to say Conchita won lots of Tie III-V titles. We have to look at the players participating in these events. A Tier I competition may also have a weak field of competitors.
With regard to the ranking issue, I just wonder that in 1995, Conchita played 16 tournaments, and her result was 6 titles, 1 r/u, 4sf (SF in all 4 GS), and 4 qf, while Steffi Graf played only 11 tournaments, but won 9. If we use the existing ranking system, would Conchita acutually become the No.1 player in 1995????? Acutually, I really don't know how the old ranking system worked. Does anyone know the answer?
With regard to the GS results, Conchita reached the final of 3 GS (Oz, French and Wimbledon), while the other two only reached the final of 2 GS (Wimbledon and US for Sabatini, and Oz and Wimbledon for Jana). Also, I wonder if all three players won titles on all 4 surfaces?
I also think that we should look at their whole career, but not on certain excellent years. I think Sabatini's career was less and less consistent since 1993, but her career before 1993 was amazing.
Martinez's only real slump is this year, but this year she was weak BOTH physically and mentally.
Nonetheless, Martinez has to compete with tons of good players these days. In the past, there were only 3-5 players that were in contention in the GS, but now anyone in the top 20 can win the GS. Martinez now has to compete with Hingis/V. Williams/S. Williams/Kournikova/Davenport/Capriari/Seles/Huber/Pierce/Clijsters/Henin/Dokic/ and on and on. Thus, again, I would say if Conchita has some good results in the next 2-3 years, I would say she is the best of the three players.

I was gonna say that using the chase against conchita might be unfair as its on such an anti clay surface, but then i realised she won a GS on grass, so that just shut my mouth for me

I'll def say novotna 3rd, but the other 2 are close for me.

Gaby's is the best... simply because she managed to equal all the achievements of the other players while being beautiful, classy and popular
