The whole top ten share a trait. They don't have to get a non-Top Ten player very far out of position to hit a winner off them. For most of them, a step is fine. Jelana, Chanda and Daniela might need them two steps out of position.

But who know how to pull people into areas of the court so that EASY winners are a result? Who gives the opponent a drop shot they can reach, then a topspin lob they can't? Who hits a short-angle APPROACH shot, leading to an easy volley?

There's no player in the top ten now who plays that way. Amelie might get there one day, if she continues her post-2001 transformation.

I can't think of a single singles player who plays that style. Ruano-Pascual and Suarez do in doubles.

I think Lindsay and Capriati, when their strokes are on, are really good at this. especially Jenny when her forehand is on. she can just pound it and pound it into a corner, and really open up the court.

ms hingis used to do this beautifully.. before it was done to her more often than not..

of course Venus and Serena have the strokes to do this, but sometimes aren't patient enough to really work a point. they generally want to end it with a blazing winner, rather than opening up the court for an easy put away. obviously, this tactic has worked well for them :)

Not true that's more Serena's case than Venus. Serena's coming along. 01 US Open semi Venus-v-Cappy.. Cap up 4-1(tht's where i start the tape) Venus tones down the power rallies w/her pins her in her backhand corner than nails a series of bachand winners down the line...brilliant stuff.

I wouldhave to Go with Venus williams whenshe is healthy. She has a lot of power when she wants to but its just a joy to watch her play the likes of hingis who she had to win by lessening her power and going for superior positioning to win the rallies and points. I think thats what makes Venus so hard to beat. She can blow you off the court if she wants to but if she's not 100% she can really wear you down mentally by playing a brilliant game of cat n mouse if necessary. thats why she and Hingis had such classic matches. Evenif they played 2 sets of tennis u basically saw every shot in the tennis history books on display. No other player has even made Venus have to resort to her running behind teh head backhand things that she used to do against hingis. anybody know what that shot is called, i cant think of the formal name of that shot but iits basically an overhead but behind you sorta.
