Venus age 17 getting to the final of her first US Open
Sharavapova age 17 getting to the final of Wimbledon

For me the Venus slight edges it becuses it was her first US Open and she had hardly played any tennis. But both are great but if Sharapova wins tomorrow she will over take Venus

Both had been extremely hyped getting there, so it's close. I'm going to give a slight edge to Venus for the following reasons:

1-it was her first US Open ever.

2-She was an unseeded player (Sharapova is not)

3-the story was so much more dramatic...the first year the Ashe Stadiumis being used...a young African American reaches the finals. It was perfect.

but like you said, if Maria wins tomorrow, she'll take it over

Maria Sharapova
1 M Sharapova(13) - Y Beygelzimer-Q 6-2 6-1
2 M Sharapova(13) - A Keothavong-WC 6-4 6-0
3 M Sharapova(13) - D Hantuchova 6-3 6-1
4 M Sharapova(13) - A Frazier(31) 6-4 7-5
QF M Sharapova(13) - A Sugiyama(11) 5-7 7-5 6-1
SF Sharapova(13) - L Davenport(5) 2-6 7-6(5) 6-1

Venus Williams
1 V Williams - L Neiland 5-7 6-0 6-1
2 V Williams - G Leon-Garcia 6-0 6-1
3 V Williams - A Huber(8) 6-3 6-4
4 V Williams - J Kruger 6-2 6-3
QF V Williams - S Testud 7-5 7-5
SF V Williams - I Spirlea(11) 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(7)

Venus beat more established players to reach where she was, but the match of Maria vs Lindsay I think puts her ahead.

I'd give it to Sharapova, only because she beat Davenport who is a highly accomplished player at Wimbledon.

Venus was fortunate that Spirlea took out Seles in the QF, if she'd beaten Monica on her way to the final, it would be her by quite a long way IMHO.

Still, I voted that both are great for different reasons.

Maria faced tougher opponents (Hantuchova, Frazier, Davenport, Sugiyama) but it was indeed Venus' first US Open so Ill give them a tie :)

Venus simply because she'd hardly played any events, and because she was playing in her first open.

Maria was seeded, Venus wasn't, end of story imo.

It'll depend on how well she does against Serena tomorrow.

Venus was spanked against Martina, so if Maria gets spanked by Serena, they'll be equal.

If Maria gets slaughtered by Serena tomorrow (doubtful), it will be less significant!

If Maria challenges Serena more than Venus did Martina, or if Maria beats Serena (God, no! lol) it will be more impressive than what Venus did.

However, based on just their routes to the final, they're about equal now.
