Well, we've had our fond farewells to Anke Huber and Nathalie Tauziat.<br />As one season draws to a close, and we eagerly await the start of the next, one just wonders who else might be set to retire.<br />Maybe a sensitive issue, but one wonders about certain players, whether they will have the motivation or the ability to keep going on the tour.<br />I won't suggest names, for now, but will leave this thread open to see what others think..

I don't think Farina has retired!

She said her best tennis was still to come only recently. I think she said at the beginning of the year that she was going to retire, but since her year turned around so dramatically pushing her ranking from 80's to 14 she has obviously changed her mind! I mean who wouldn't!

Conchita-maybe, but think she is getting a new coach.

I dont think Amanda will because Lori is now her coach. Seles is no where near retirement in fact she has plenty of tennis left. She's actually getting better imho.

Testud still has game and determination.

Rubin-not yet. Still has good tennis left.

Silvia said she wasn't going to retire in 2002...I really hope she doesn't ! She just had her best year in 2001 so she probably want to keep the momentum going for a bit...

I´ve no idea how she is connected to that personally ( victims, history anything ) or maybe it was fear to fly or an injury or anything - I don´t think she´ll go down but up so maybe this is it

2002 though might be her last season and she is the FIRST candidate for retirement

I think that Conchita and Arantxa same as Coetzer Seles Testud and Farina all won´t retire in 2002 but 2003 maybe ; not because it´s just my wish but I don´t see them retiring if coming back 2002 in the first case or stabilizing form and results in the second case

For Farina or Testud retiring in a season after their best season, I´m sceptical

I don´t see Monica and Coetzer retiring, definetly not ; Amanda might use this travelling with Lori to increase her doubles ambition now anyway

Not that I have to explain my self but I find it really annoying that there is a huge amount of people riping off the governmentand the general public so the lazy bastards don't have to work. And beleive me it upsets and annoys me that some of these people are my friends. The system is just crap and I quite understand why people do it, because I work 7 days a week for fuck all and my mates on the dole are out partying every week claiming every benifit there is and there is nothing wrong with them only that they are bone idle!! sorry if I upset you

conchita ain't going to be retiring for a long time! the reason why she has took time out this year is to protect the injury so 2002 will be a success! i think she has got 3 more seasons to go(oh no - i'm gonna cry!!!), ASV 2 more, but i fear we will be saying goodbye to the little assassin amanda coetzer this year.

I think you have to look at each player's individual situation. A woman athlete who is extremely fit can maintain her top physical level until at least age 32, and some can go a few years beyond. (Look at all of the top track athletes around age 35-36 or so.)

Two factors contribute to a players' decision to retire: injuries, or loss of motivation. Players lose motivation when they get tired of the grind, or figure they'll never reach (or get back to) their ranking goals. Ironically, players who have had more success can be greater candidates because they've achieved their career goals, and they're used to being successful. Reaching the occasional semi or final won't satisfy them.

magdalena grzybowska (23) said that if she won't really recover from her knee injuries or if she'll get injured again like this year (her last match was in march 5th) or like in 1998 (out for 10 months), she will retire.

so i really hope that she will stay healthy - the only thing i want is to see her playing, she must not be back under the top 30.

Off course some people take advantage, but don't think all unemployed people are like that. And what's wrong with going out and enjoying yourself if your unemployed? More fool you if you work for a company that rips you of for a small wage. <br />What is really crap is that we live in country where more people live below the poverty line than ever, yet fat cats in the city (I know this as I work in the city) have all sorts of 'fiddles' on the go, dodging taxes, insider dealing, ripping of pensions funds etc, lining there already bulging pockets. <br />I'm talking about people like Jeffrey Archer plus all those that vote themselves large pay rises, and then get golden handshakes when they retire from formally state owned companies (i.e. that's 'our' money). We are talking about literally millions of pounds, not the few quid that you get from the dole every other week. And don't even get me started on the whole issue of how Western governments and Companies exploit people in the third world, now that really is something to complain about.

I know it's hard to see your favourite players retire, but I'm just happy for them if that's what they want.

Can u blame Anke because she want a family? I hope she'll have a great family.
