My pick is Jen even though we know winning slams is less important than the tier 1's and 2's or even the satelittes she won 2 of the 4 and reached the semis of the other 2 nobody else can say that. She also made it to the quarters of every tournament she played.

Venus should of course....winning miami consecutively, defending wimbly,USopen,Acura,Pilot Pen,and taking Hamburg title....

follow up should be Jen, Lindsay,Monica,Kim,Jelena,Amelie and Justine.

But Venus deserves the top honors first and foremost.

The race is close between Venus and Jennifer

both had 2 slams

Jennifer did better at the 2 she didn't win than Venus did at the two she didn't win. Venus however won more titles total.

Both through the year consistently made the latter stages of events (both lost 2 events before quarters). Jennifer in Sydney to Raymond and Rome to Kuti Kis; Venus to Henin in Berlin, and Schett at Roland Garros.

Jennifer finished at #1, Venus #3.
Venus had a better winning percentage.

If you compare them, it's almost dead equal.

However, the point in favour that I give to Venus is the head to head record between them. They all did well against the top players, but to me it seemed Venus was the successful overall against the other top players, and against eachother, Venus went 3-0 which I think is the deciding factor.

Jennifer could still come out the winner and I would not argue it because she too is deserving, but my personal opinion is that Venus is slightly more deserving of player of the year.

I think Jen will get comeback player of the year and Venus player of the year... although they both deserve being player of the year.

I can't understand why everyone is so interested in this completely subjective and meaningless prize.Everyone has his own rating system, so there is no absolute 'player of the year'.
I mean, i have defended the ranking system many times. I think it's okay, so for me the only choice is Lindsay.

I think they'll give it to Jennifer, because she did get the 2 slams like Venus, but she also got to be the number 1 player.

My pick goes to Venus. Why? Becuase Venus won 2 slams and won 5 other tournaments. Yes Jennifer Capriati won also 2 slams and reached semis of the other 2, but if your expected to be the number 1 player in the world you have to win other tournaments as well, not just do well at slams. Doing well in slams is a VERY good accomplishment, but Jennifer Capriati has only 1 tournament prior to the slams. Thats why Venus gets my pick, she has beaten everyone in the top ten and does not have a losing record to any one of them. Jennifer did make it to numbr one for TWO weeks , The only reason that Jenn got to number 1 becuase she had no points to defend in 2001, unlike Venus, Venus defended most of her titles but what did she get nothing ranking wise maybe except faulter. We'll see next year if she can defend those points. . The question for Jennifer is "can she defend all those points?", we just have to see in 2002.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE PLAYERS NEXT YEAR
come back soon martina
GOOD LUCK TO LINDSAY AND SERENA AT CHASE FINAL

Venus should be player of the year. Jen had a wonderful year also but finished up just awful. Has not won a tournie in 8 months. Dam! The fact is Jen probably is no better than the fifth best player on the tour. Venus, Lindsay, Monica, and Serena will all be ahead of her next year. But that is next year. Sorry 3 tournies is just not enough to be player of anything.

What are the actual criteria for the award? Should we only consider WTA events? The Slams? Fed Cup? Doubles?

The PC pick is Capriati.
Venus is the best player.
Lindsay probably had the best year.

They have enough problems. They should play it safe and choose Jenn.

of course they will choose Jen. She's the player they've been fawning over since she won Oz (sometimes deservedly so, sometimes not). Meanwhile they have just practically accused Venus of lying about her injury.

I will gladly eat crow if they pick Venus as player of the year.

Moon, yes they accused her but have just cleared her so she will be receiving her $140,000. Not that she needs it.

Are we talking about the word "TOUR"

Who else?
1. Venus, 2 grandslam + 4 titles
2. Lindsay, 8 titles

No one else.........

If Venus just played this indoor season, the ranking might have a diffrent story.

I think it'll be Venus or Lindsay as well... I mean winning 3 titles is just not enough for you to be the player of the year... that'll be a joke.
