If I remember well then it was in the exhbition tournament wich was every year till a few years ago, In 92 Mary Joe beat Steffi in 3 sets(7:6 in the third I believe). I never saw it but I read that time that it was a great match.
Hey, what about the retired players? These are some ladies who have defeated Steffi
-Navratilova & Evert (of course!)
-Sabatini (defeated Steffi 11 times, nobody else has defeated her so many times)
-Hana Mandlikova (defeated her once)
-Jana Novotna (4)
-Kimiko Date (1, I think in the Fed Cup)
-Zina Garrison (twice)
-Helena Sukova (twice)
-Natasha Zvereva (sigh*) wee all know when she defeated Steffi
Now these are the head to heads of some players who never managed to beat Steffi. Some of these numbers are quite impressive:
Mary " The french jewel " Pierce, in Rolland Garros, the year when Mary Pierce lost in final against Aranxa Sanchez - Vicario. The score was 6 / 2 6 / 2 if I remember right !!!!! !!!!!

Did Mariaan de Swardt really defeat Steffi ? I only remember her taking Steffi to 3 sets twice.
I think that many players showed their best tennis when defeating Steffi, for example:
- Mary defeating Steffi 6-2 6-2 FO 1992 (amazing stuff, winners everywhere !)
- Patty defeating Steffi 6-3 6-4 USO 1998 (very intelligent play, using her lefthand-shots)
- Amanda Coetzer (lost the first 5 matches in 2 sets but then trounced Steffi more than once; can anyone remember how she did that ?)
mariaan de swart beat Steffi in Brighton 95 6:2 4:6 6:1
and I for sure remember how Amanda beat Steffi 3 times in 97 she just let Steffi made the errors and they came like never before(well except for Paris 91). I think it`s the only time Steffi laughed because she played so bad(Berlin) but of course afterall there was nothing funny about it since Steffi should never have played Berlin, Strassbourg(wich she won) or Paris because by doing that she made her injury worse and so she missed 9 months after, and of course in Australia she should not have played either because she had fever and got a heatstroke stupid docters
I don`t know what happened in Canada 95 only that it was not unexpected after what happened the weeks before
Even Amanda said that she was lucky to often meet Steffi at the right time
Isn't it amazing that we are all surprised by how many people Steffi lost to, and yet she has that amazing record? I suppose most of her losses were at the two ends of her career.
I wonder if it will be possible for any current players to win as many grand slams as Steffi, and still have lost to such a myriad of players??
Didn't Steffi beat Martina N. in the finals of Wimbledon, right before Martina N retired? That seems like just yesterday. I remember thinking how odd it seemed that Martina felt she had to retire after making it to the finals.
