I remember that Halep in the past used to bend over backwards to avoid hitting volleys, to the point of her literally reatreating & running backwards to hit a groundstroke almost every time.

she actually approaches the net quite a bit she just sucks at net. kerber is allergic to the net and basically never approaches it unless she truly has to even though her volleys aren't that bad. Halep comes to mind as well.
Svitolina is a actually pretty good at the net though.

Rybakina looks like she comes out in hives when she goes to the net! Or at least her game does. But at least she has been trying to improve, rather than avoiding the issue entirely like Osaka.

Even players that go to the net often can't volley properly, especially the backhand volley, because it is not natural for the legions of players with the two-handed backhand. So they use the drive volley. Iga uses a double-handed drive volley instead of a single-handed backhand volley, Emma has an aversion to the smash and will drive volley instead.

Most players rarely volley at all in the conventional sense during singles play. The best volleyers in the top 20 have to be Ash and Babs. Other top 50ish players who can volley from what I can remember about seeing their matches: Coco Gauff, Pavs, Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova, SST, Martic, Podoroska.
