Interesting poll Volcana. To be honest, I can't imagine anyone hating the results of these players in question. I suppose it would depend on the circumstances in which these players gain their victories. For instance, if Capriati would continue to demonstrate a bad attitude on the court or Kournikova would win a small tournament without top level competition, these instances might attract some snippy comments, but I can't imagine anyone hating a player for their victory. I'm probably totally wrong about this as I am terrible about predicting what a person will do or not do.
Venus completing the Slam definitely. Look at how much people hate her now?
I think Jen defending Oz would come in 2nd. She's not as well liked as when she won it last year.
Martina is LONG overdue for a slam. So is Serena.
Anna winning a title would create the least animosity I think. I for one would be happy to see her get the monkey off her back.
I think Venus and Jenn would tie. From my eyes, the majority of posters here do not actually hate Venus.... there are just a few irritants that make the rest of the board look bad.
As for Jenn, there are people that go into her fan threads to celebrate her losing, or insult her for her past, etc. So I don't think Venus would get it anyworse than Jenn.. though Venus fans may percieve it differently.
Definitely Venus .. Like I said before , there are those who are vomitting in fear that she could do it, so they say stuff like "Venus will never win Roland Garos blah , blah, blah". Of course her game will always be reduced to raw power in their eyes
I'd guess that Hingis winning a Slam would generate the most hatred. Venus completing the career Slam would create a ton of snotty, "I told you so! And anybody who disagrees is a wicked racist!" threads.
i think if any of the above happens, a great deal of "I told you so" threads would be generated by their fans.
Hingisfans and Serena fans would laugh at the nay sayers who said they wouldn't win slams again (Hingis has more at the moment), Venus fans would laugh at those who hope for her failure, Anna fans would laugh at those who think she's nothing more than a model holding a racquet, and Jenn fans would laugh at those who said she'd never defend any of her slams.
Its not reall fair to pin point one group of fans.. I think that all would do it.
Its annoying when anyone does it mind you.. as if you deserve a gold star or something because someone you have no affiliation with accomplished something - but thats a whole other topic altogether.
Williams Rulez: thankyou...its the truth Fans of all players can be total smart asses when they feel they were right, and someone else was wrong.. I've done it myself I imagine, and I KNOW i will likely do it in the future, if say. Hingis picks up another slam.
definitly Venus winning the Slam (what won't happen )
Becca has right in her post about posters starting 'I was right'-threads. The only reason why lots of people don't like the Williams sisters is because they dominate too much. If they are in their best shape, and fully concentrated almost nobody can beat them. I think people rather choose for the underdog in such case, isn't? hmm well I do.
I don't think there will be any hate threads if Anna would win a tournament...not at all. I thinks she really deserves it. She's no absolute topplayer, but she has everything to hang around #10 during her carreer. People only see her as a beautiful girl, who only gets attention because of her beauty and not for her tennis. But she can play..and I really hope for her that she can prove it, I think it's really frustrating for her.
Did anyone notice I got off the subject?
Chris Ba - you're right, its comparing apples and oranges. Wasn't really my point. The fact theat no one responded that I was being absurd is the real tragedy. Sports can be a positive, uplifting thing for people. For a lot of folks, tennis seems more about condemnation than congratulations.
I listed five positive wonderful things. Things which hurt no one, and indicated great dedictaion and achievement.
It's sad that any of these things would produce hate threads.
It's infinitely sadder that virtually ALL of them would.
Kart - As long as they aren't bashing denigrating other players, I don't care. Noone has to say 'the loser playerd a great match.' However, saying versions of 'she lost because she's a bad human being' is just absurd.
I'd say the Venus accomplishment. We've seen how much vitriol has been directed at her with her challenging for the #1 spot in the world. With the career slam, she'd be encroaching on the all-time greats. So not only would some fans of current players feel threatened, so would some fans of past players.
Hingis has already broached that standard because she's won 3 of the slams, and reached the final of the other on a couple of occasions. Venus has had a couple of good multi-slam years, but it's the same 2 slams. She is thus vulnerable to being pigeonholed as someone who can only win on "her" surfaces. If she wins the other 2 slams, the suggestions of her being "one-dimensional" go by the wayside.
