It's been a while since she beat a top ten player. (Charleston) She's only done it twice since OZ.

So who's the unfortunate victim going to be?
Which top ten player will Martina next defeat?

"Power Player" (Loosely defined) Any top ten player not named Hingis.

I think it will be Jen Cap, if she ever gets a chance. Lindsay would surprise me.

How interesting. The statement "...She's only done it twice since OZ." is still true. And this thread is a year old. The 'OZ' has now become OZ 2002 instead od OZ 2001. A good thread stays good I guess.

If Martina skips Asia, she could well go an entire year without beating a top tenplayer.

I think Martina needs some time before she beats the top players again. She must improve, and the longer she stays out the harder it will be for her. The girls are getting better, so she needs to be in top condition.

Martina really has to come back in optimum shape, as physically 100% and be able to move and anticipate at the maximum level.

Lets face it, Martina can give the ball a steady whack, but that game style is not her natural one.

She needs to 'feed' off the pace, rather than try to generate it and use her crafty combination of placement, angles and spins to defeat the power players.

I think she could still take out Hantuchova (which she did in Hamburg 02) and Monica. Even mini power babes like Dementieva, Dokic and Henin.

Lindsay, Williams x 2, Jen and even Kim have a much higher level of power tennis and Martina ultimately has to reach a level akin to theirs.

I think she can do it without changing her game style (except the serve!).

Martina might beat Dokic, Henin or Seles according to me. Henin due to nerves, Dokic due to inconsistency and Seles due to court adjustment problems if the surface does not suit her as much as Hingis.

Regarding Jenn, the times she won against her were when Jenn didn´t know about her shots again. She learned that in 2001/2002. Now Martina won´t have a chance against Kim, Lindsay, Amelie, Jenn and the Williams.

i think henin or capriati maybe dokic and possibly even clijsters. henin and capriati were too up and down this year and dokic lost it from the us open onwards. i think she could beat clijsters iin a big match because hingis has all the experience for them and kim, although she is getting their with them, haSN'T quite got the experience. but i woould say one of the first 3 before she beat kim, it more depends on who she plays first.

I updated the thread because I thought it would be interesting to reflect on the year's performance with the comments made by posters in 2001. I don't hate either Seles or Hingis, in fact I admire them.

deftman - Look carefully at the dates. The thread started in Oct 2001. Hence the comment, 'she's only done it twice since OZ' IS still true. She's beaten two top ten players 'since OZ'. Only now we're talking OZ 2002. I explained that in the post. In fact, YOU quoted that part of the post.

"The 'OZ' has now become OZ 2002 instead od OZ 2001."

I'm not sure where you're coming from here.

Ah, I misread deftman's post and thought he was talking to me.

By the way, as Dee pointed out should we give Martina credit for defeating Hantuchova? She wasn't top 10 at the time, but I would say that she is currently of the calibre of players like Dokic.

I don't think she is ready for anyone in the top 7 right now, but I think she can beat Dokic and Hantuchova(inexperienced.)
