I usually rate players according to their ability. But it occurred to me that some players are playing closer to their potential than others. Plus it is just not a question of age and/or experience. Of course older player should be closer but not necessarily so. So I divided the top fifteen according to percentage of potential reached.

90% - 100%

1. Martina Hingis
2. Lindsay Davenport
3. Jennifer Capriati
4. Sandrine Testud
5. Nathalie Tauzauit
6. Silvia Farina Elia
7. Monica Seles

80% - 89%

1. Venus Williams
2. Kim Clijsters
3. Justine Henin
4. Amelie Mauresmo
5. Meghann Shaughnessy

70% - 79%

1. Serena Williams
2. Jelena Dokic
3. Elena Dementieva

Of course just because you have greater room for improvement does not mean you will reach it. Depends on work ethic, committment, and circumstances.

If I were rating Anna she would be probably in the 70-79 percentile.

I think Monica has a little bit more room for improvment otherwise she would be dominating the tour again!

I have to pick Serena. She has the game to play well on all surfaces and if she would actually play more tournaments and get past the mental block she has about playing Venus, Serena could truly be a dominant force in tennis.

Monica_Rules, I agree Monica has room for improvement that is why I put her seventh. Potential includes both physical improvement as well as mental improvement.

I think Martina is only playing 75% of her capacity, because of the lack of confidence

Capriati, Davenport, Dokic, Monica and Venus are playing their 100%, definitely. I can't believe Dokic will do more than she did this year, maybe just one GS title.

Serena will still mature as a tennis player and become one of the greatest tennis champions!m

when Amanda Coetzer plays good she is playing 100% to 500% of her ultimate potential if she was playing 85% or below she wouldn't be rank in the top 50. being 5'2 and all and weighing 114 pounds.

When you look at Martina's overall game, she is playing the best tennis of her life. It is her opponents that skew her results. When I look at pictures of Martina in 97....man was she fat.

For me Lindsay is perfection personified.
When you watch her when she's on, you have the feeling that she can't miss. Then she's the best in executing points.
Of course that doesn't mean she is superior to everyone. Others still move better. But you feel that this is the maximum Lindsay can reach.

Yes I agree she is so much fitter now, and I also agree she is (well at least early 2001 anyway), was playing the best tennis of her life. BUT if her serve isn't working and if she can be broken easily by anyone, it means she's nowhere near her potential.

Look at what Serena can do... hitting all first serves in and winning 16 of 17 points on serve

She has unlimited potential!
