....will they be treated with sympathy by the other players for the first few matches? If you were the first opponent of a player who had just experience a personal tragedy how competitive could you be against that player?

Any thoughts?

No, I think you just have to play your own game...personal matters have to be left off the court.

The bigger question is will they be treated with sympathy by the crowds, especially the AO and French crowds.

If either sister returns before they have fully dealt with their feelings, then they deserve to get walloped by whoever has the ability to do so. No one will or should go easy on them. The crowds may not care too much since the tragedy did not physically happen to them. It was a different story with Monica Seles.

step by step - the Williams' are being rightly appreciated - missing from the US Open and now sad recent events, i'm sure that they will get a truly warm welcome at their next tournament by fans and (hopefully) players alike. :)
